Kyle called me Thanksgiving night, apparently his 4th gear disintigrated while driving to the inlaws. If you know his Bus, he needs an 80-83 transaxle, 4-speed, aircooled bus to retreive it from. Well, after calling everyone I knew and then a bunch that I didn't, I finally hooked him up with a guy by the name of Rich which lives about an hour from where he is at. He struck a deal with him and is going to baby it up to his place where he has to pull the motor and trans on both vehicles. Then put the trans from Rich's bus in and then his engine. Kyles got a little work in front of him, but Rich will supply him with the tools needed to do the job. I know Rich has a heated garage whick I hope is empty for Kyle, otherwise he'll have to work in 30 degree weather :(  I also posted an ad on the Samba for Kyle in the Vanagon Parts section. I don;t think he received any calls on it though.
Kind of weird for me to be posting this on your site Huh???

Thanks,
As with anyone calling me for help as a fellow Dubber, I would do everything I can to help you out. I'm not sure about how available parts are in Chattanooga, but the midwest is very limited on VW enthusiasts and clubs who support them. I'm glad I was able to help Kyle out although he has a lot of work in front of him.
Rich is a guy who has a lot of VW stuff and goes to a lot of swaps. More in it for the money than the enthusiast. I think the price was $350 if Kyle pulled the trans himself. Kinda pricey to me. But seeing that Mid America wants $1100 for a rebuilt might not be too awful bad. Hopefully he can get a better deal when he's there. Hard to say No when there's not tooo many of these trans's around.
Big Joe
David, sorry for bothering you at 11pm Thanksgiving eve. You weren't the only one I called that late trying to find a trans. But you were the only one that got hit with the time change!

Hey Joe,  I don't think the price is to far out of line as those units are a little hard to find intact. I just hope this tranny is a good one. No fun to change out under the best conditions.
No sweat on the late call. I wished I could have been more help.
If you ever have any problems down in our neck of the woods don't hesitate to "ring" us up. We will try to something.

I have not found a trans yet. I pulled the broken one out, and will take with us. We've rented a car to get home. Have to fix or replace back home, then figure out how to go back to Illinois. It will be below cold when I put it back together.

Kyle,  I wish I could be a help on the tranny. Thats the only tranny that VW had that I haven't been into. I have heard that these trannys were a booger to repair but I may have been told wrong .   I just wonder if you would be ahead to just put a rebuilt unit in other than a used up unit that may or may not be good. Its a long way back in there.  At lease you would have a fighting chance with the re-built. But who knows. There might be someone around our area that is a expert on those things and give you the straight dope to what to do.

I got a trans from Joe at Tri-state. It is one Joe had sent out and got repaired and checked out, then never used. I think it will be just what the Vanagonagon needs. :D
All I've got to do is mod the heck out of it and go to Illinois, then freeze to death :x  putting it back in...

When you comin' back up to throw the trans back in Kyle? If you want, we can get the bus over to my house and you can work on it in a heated garage. I'm not talking about no little propane or electric heat either. Dayton hanging furnace can keep it 75 degrees at 0 outside, no problem. I think it's about 1-1/2 hours away!
To help you think on this............

I think I  already talked to you on the phone, anyway I just got the turbo new beetles engine held in with 4 bolts 'bout an hour ago. This will be the car we go to Pontiac in. Betty ordered a hitch for it, we will have that by the end of the week.{car just not big enough for all my junk, have to tow a trailer) I want to go up at Christmas and put the trans in. Thank you a million times over for all your help and the offer on the warm garage!!! But I've got real warm coveralls, i'll be OK.  [-o<
