KC's New Bus

« on: December 12, 2009, 10:53:45 PM »
I drove over to Joppa, AL this morning to tow ASBug's new bus home.  The 160 mile trip went well (other than my truck wants to cut out when under a heavy load).  Then we got to his driveway.  An hour later, we had the bus out of the road (but just bearly) and off the tow dolly . . . It's amazing how little traction an S-10 pulling a bus on a tow dolly has when it hits a small uphill covered with pine needles!

Anyway, it was a cool trip to pick up a cool bus with lots and lots of documentation, begining with a Southland VW window sticker and tons of Southland repair records . . . as well as records from TX, CA, OH, and lots of points in between.   8)I would love to see the repair copies .. I may have laid hands on that van a time or too

Zen,
Drove the Bus the Last 150 feet.  PBrake is dragging after setting overnight.
I diconected the key feed and straight wired the coil and it litterally fired right up!

Runs alittle rough, (Gas is 1 yr old...) - no idle is main problem.

Got some photos of the Bus last night , IT WAS DARK

Post when I get back from church.

I am at least the 5th owner, Extensive records for 1st 6 years, then sporatic.  Have names of the oreiginal buyer and almost all the OEM Documentation.  I have the Window sticker!

Original Purchaser was a Mati Lu Deitz from Chattanooga TN.

Will see if any people here recognize the names of the PO's

KC - out. :D

I was working at Southland at that time. I would love to look at the O.R.'s from Southland. I may have laid hands on that van a few times.

I figured it would fire right up as soon as you got power to the coil.  It sounded like it had good compression.   8)  When you put power to the coil, did you also put power to the idle cut-off?

Very nice.  glad you guys made it home with it alright.

Good thing Zen changed that gas tank out.  He probably wouldn't have been able to pull the hills with the bas in tow with the lack of fuel getting through....

Yeah,
I could hear it working.

Checked the POS jeep ignition that is installed and the posts for the electronics and coil are not getting signal from key.

Prior to installing another non VW switch, Does anyone have a 1970 switch?

Will any other years, models fit?

Thanks.
KC

It's been a while, KC, but i seem to remember the 68-71 or so bus ignition switch being a bit of a pain to put in, but i can't remember if there are differences in them or not.

Buses = electrical problems, but when you get them sorted out, looks like one sweet all og bus.  I think you done good.

And, I'll i have to be let in on the private joke about the fuel / ignition thing after all the talks with Zen.

Apparently, the rust clogging up the fuel filter wasn't my only problem.  It has new plugs/dis. cap/rotor and the plug wires are about a year old (and they were a high dollar lifetime warranty set) and still in good shape.  The truck runs great . . . to a point . . . then cuts out.  I can't decide if it's running out of gas or the ignition is cutting out when it gets under a load, but something is happening.  Probably rust in the carb.  Maybe the vacuum advance unit is bad . . . or maybe the centrifical part isn't working right.  At any rate, it wasn't an issue going over, but once we had a Westy on a tow dolly behind it, you could forget running uphill in 5th gear . . . or 4th gear on a steep hill . . . or 3rd gear on a long steep hill.  It was kind'a reminciant of Homer pulling the big trailer full of junk over to Stevenson.  Running 35 MPH on the interstate, you don't make a lot friends!    Oh well, at least I don't have rust in the gas tank anymore!

I'm thinking it's my carb.  It's a Rochester progressive 2 barrel.  According to a lot of stuff I've read, it's the "worst" carb that Rochester ever made.  It's kind'a like half of a Quadrajet.  On the trip back, Casey suggested that maybe the jet for the secondary barrel was clogged.  I was leaning towards a problem with the spark advance . . . but the more I think about it, the more I think Casey was right.  Under normal driving conditions, I usually stay out of the secondary barrel of the carb (I know this because I regularly get 24+ miles per gallon and have gotten as high as 32 MPG).  But under a heavy load, I need to give it more gas . . . but past a certian point, the secondary throddle plate opens and instead of giving the engine more fuel and air, I just give it more air.

I think I'm taking a trip to Pull A Part next Saturday.  A 2 barrel carb is about $20.  Hopefully I can find a decent one to rebuild, then just swap 'em out.  One of the Atlanta Pull A Parts has a 1959 Vanagon (they list all buses as Vanagons) and 2 early 70's Beetles plus a handfull of water-coolers I want to pick through while I'm there.  Maybe between now and then they will get in a '70 Westy that I can get the switch assembly out of for Casey.   8)
