This is a story that my family has passed around for YEARS, and I wanted to share it with you guys.
Back in 1973, my uncle Ken had a brand new '73 Super, and loved that car to death, he put as much EMPI and Gene Berg as he could into that car, and from what I am told, the car would FLY! I've got a picture of it somewhere, and if I can find it, I'll post it for you. ANYWAY- Ken liked to take it to the local "strip" (which is Cherry Road back home in Rock Hill, SC) and show off.
You guys know those fine summer nights where there is almost no humidity, the stars are shining, and the temperature is perfect? Well, this was one of those nights. Uncle Ken pulls out onto Cherry Road, and grabs 1st and 2nd gear. (Oh, did I mention he had dual DELORTO carbs? sweet, I know) Anyway, the next thing he knows, he sees that nasty little light on the dash, and pulls over. Broken belt. Great ending to a wonderful night.
Now, I know from experience to always, always, ALWAYS carry a spare belt and tools with you whenever you drive your bug. Ken never thought about it. So, here he was on the side of the road wondering what to do next when a gentleman about 100 years old pulls up behind him in a late 50's bug. He says, "Son, I've watched you from the window of that restaurant there just about every other night, and I bought something just for you, because I knew sooner or later you would need it. Now, I've had this for about a month waiting for just the right time to give it to you." He handed my uncle a rather large box, neatly wrapped, then took off without saying another word.
Ken opened the box, and inside was an extra belt, a quart of oil, a screwdriver, the correct wrench to replace the belt, a VW manual, and a note. Ken opened the note and read, "Next time, you're buying your own belt and oil. Quit being so d*** stupid, or I'll show you what kind of butt-kickin' an old man can do. By the way, you're welcome.
P.S.- take the tools back inside the restaurant for the next dumb@%% kid who thinks he's a hot-shot."
I wish we had more of these cool old guys hangin' around to take charge like that!
