Franny (87) was driving, my mom (86) was in the back seat . . . Franny moved into the fast lane to pass a mini van. About the time the front of the Passat got even with the back of the mini van a dark green car nailed them in the rear end. The impact caused them to bump the rear corner of the mini van, then spun them 2 or 3 complete loops across the turn lane. When Franny regained control she was headed head on into the southbound fast lane traffic (rush hour, about 5:15). She had hit her head causing a gash that took 7 staples to close, but still had the presents of mind to get the car back across the road and off on the shoulder with being hit again. The car that hit them kept going. No one in the mini van was hurt and there was very little damage to it. Franny and Mom both went to the ER, and both walked out under their own power, laughing and cutting up, about 8pm. It could have be A LOT worse!
Our 96 Passat just got nailled in the rear. We are probably in the market for a replacement . . . this one looks interesting.
Probably totaled
Yeah, I figure it's probably about a $1200 car on a good day . . . and even if there isn't an structural damage, it looks to me like an easy $2000 worth of body work. The back bumper is pushed in at least 6" and both rear quarters are popped out . . . it's pretty much wrinkled up from the doors back. State Farm uninsured motorist is covering the medical bills . . . I don't know what they are going to offer on the car. If it's nothing structural, I might keep it and start driving it to work. I got all the oil leaks fixed, the heat and air work great and it's got a good stereo . . . and gets about 7 or 8 mpg better than my S-10.
