70mph in the rain..in my bug

« on: October 29, 2003, 09:08:29 PM »
so, this was a long while ago but I was reminded of it driving the golf the other day...I remember when I was little me and my dad were getting onto quarter J in our 78 beetle. It was raining and storming with 3 people in the car (dad, me, cousin). I remember that day so well, it was the scariest thing I can remember from my childhood. That bug shook so hard, and it was raining...it was so scary. The whole time it felt like the car was gonna blow off the road. :(  I jsut was reminded while trying to get my golf onto quarter J, lol.

Between being nose-light, tail-heavy, not much downforce, and frequently saggy rear suspensions, Beetles get A LOT of air under their bodies, right on to that nice flat pan (that's now angled just a little bit up due to the above).  Oh, yeah, they'll catch the poop out of a crosswind, too!  A light nose on a wet road doesn't give much traction, either.  All equaling a "pucker factor" of 10+ @70MPH.

Let's be carefull out there!
