will this hurt my rear end?

« on: April 07, 2012, 05:30:31 PM »
I have rear wheel drive Volvo.  the tires on the back wheels are different
195-60-r15
215-65-r15

Will that mess up the differential? IF the anser is YES  , why ?   SC

It won't help it, but the rest of the car will probably be shot long before it wears out the differential.

my understanding is that the differential will take up the slack of the shorter tire. Its acceptable when it thinks the car is turning (not that much), but if it happens on the interstate for long miles, it will cause pre-mature wear. If it has a limited-slip, it will be even worse...

Or you could let the air out of one tire, Put about 80 lb of air in the other. That would sort of even it out   :o :o ;D ;D.  I really kinda go along with Nicks comment . But it is a Volvo so the spider gears in the Diff. would maybe go 250 K before you would have to do root canals on the teeth of the spider gears. :o :D

If both tires are the same size and the car is rolling straight down the road, the spider gears in the differential sit still.  The purpose of the differential is to let the inside tire turn slower than the outside tire on a turn.  Like Nick said, with two different size tires, the differential "thinks" you are turning when you are going straight.  More movement = faster wear . . . but in this case, I still say the rest of the car will shot long before a slight difference in tire size kills the rear end.  If you want to keep the wear in the spider gears even, just swap tires every few hundred miles.

Then when the belts slip in the tires, put a matching set on. ;)

Put matching tires on ??  That would be to simple wouldn't it ??  You know SC doesn't think that way ;) ;)

I ended up inflating the big tire 20  psi and then pumping 50 PSI in the small tire.    I am one smart MF.  SC
