volvo gear shifting memory

« on: April 13, 2011, 06:36:20 AM »
Ok,  So my Son has this 94 Volvo Station wagon with the mighty 4 cyl.  Does this model have an Ecu that determines you driving style and decides to shift at high RPMs?

I reckon his driving style has been start engine and  floor it.

When I try to demonstrate how to get it in 4th gear  with out taching up to 4000 rpm. I'm surprised how long it takes for the transmission to decide to shift.

Maybe there is a setting to get it shift when I want it to?   SC

you may want to check the kick down cable,  also check the fluid level and condition

Thanks ,  The Fluid is nice an red.   It may be Low.  But there is some in it  I'll check that  when I'm on level ground.

Is the kick down cable what connects  the hand shifter to the lever on the side of the trans?

Or is some where else?  SC

it connects at the throttle body next to the acelerator cable and goses into the side of the trans.  not sure which trans it has in it but we had some success by changing the filter and putting an additive, i have always liked lucas trans, but i worked for a guy the swore by slick 50 for the trans, i have one that would not shift into over drive and we put the slick 50 in there and fixed and did not hear back from the customer

been along time since i have fooled with these but most had an overdrive solinoid that was activated by the button on the shifter, not sure if this would have anything to do with your problem

This is a dark picture
Travis
there is a black cable that goes behind the engine and down towards passenger side.

I reckon that is the kick down cable

There is spring pressure when i pull the black cable with my fingers,  no slack in it

I think I'm on the right track .   I'll try putting some slack in it today

Right On Travis,
the cable was a bit taunt.  I got some slack in it now.   went a driving.  I can squeak it in 3rd now at 20 mph.  It acts like I like automatics to act when I let off the pedal.  It shifts high like it should.   Great.  SC
