Volvo doa near costco

« on: December 20, 2011, 08:27:11 PM »
Now the Volvo die on the hiway out by Costco.  Dragged the pos to the old shopping center by clod springs rd.   It's acting like no gas.  Put in gas.  Still no fire.  I'm think fuel pump.  It's late, 8:30.  I'm home. I'm in no mood.  Cheers. Sc

were the conditions similar to that guys? Were you pushing it hard enough to get it warmer than normal and possibly overheat that chip? Will it go back to normal when it cools off? Maybe its time to rewire that chip inside of the air conditioning system and just run the AC all the time!

It never acted up before and it's not very hot out so I guess fuel pump is more likely

This would be to simple.  My '85 740 use to love fuel pump relays .  My '92 240 would pop a fuse for the fuel pump once in awhile  or the fuse would corrode in the fuse panel.  Never had a pump to conk out.

Ditto,  we saw a lot of relays and I have seen the fuses even wear though where it looks like the fuse is good,  every Volvo tech has a good relay in their box,  it is white and I think is in the console area somewhere

My old 240 never lost a relay, but did pop fuses. I would try to spin the fuse in its holder and the dang thing would fall apart in my hand. If I remember right , the relay on the 740 is behind the fuse panel which is  behind ash tray. I don't have a clue where the relay is on a 240.

Worked on Volvo.  The relay works.... the pump in the tank works.  I have spark.  Seems the 2nd fuel pump is not working.  I did not get a chance to work on It.   I plan to drag it home thurs

Friday.  I should be shopping, instead,  I am piloting the Brick as it is pulled by the Sienna by my Son who is learning that if we are not in sync with the braking,  we pogo whip lash one another due to the stretchy tow rope between the cars.  This is a long tow on back roads.  I miss Power steering and brakes.

I decided that the 2nd fuel pump was the villian.   It has power and is  wrring and sounded good.  The Filter looks like it has been installed for a while by the rust on it.

My next random trouble shoot is the Timing Belt skipped or broke and I will Unhook the battery to reset the ecu also.  SC

You can pull the top cam belt cover to see the belt. Spin the engine over and watch the cam gear. Sometime the belt won't break in two ,just strips the teeth. If the belt is bad , put a wrench on the cam bolt and try to turn the camshaft. Volvo's had a habit of locking the camshaft up on the cly. head if you haven't changed oil in the last 5 years. Also Volvo's don't like dirty filters.

thx Bugtech

I got the cover of the timing belt.  the belt is  in there,  not broke.  feels  loose on the top cam sprocket.  I can slide belt on the sprocket teeth. That seem odd.  I will spin engine to check the teeth.   The battery is dead  and my trickle charger is real slow.

Nice thing is if the timing belt breaks, you can put a new one on and keep going without replacing valves

Can you turn the camshaft with a wrench ??? Do you have a "how to" manual ??  If not get one if you are going to try to do this job.  This not the easiest belt to replace, but by far its not the hardest. Merry Xmas to your clan ;D
