Transmission Fluids/Oils

« on: June 08, 2011, 05:20:51 PM »
I have read everywhere that GL4 is the way to go with everything. Where does everyone get their oil for these things?

The VW transaxle takes GL4, my Nissan Frontier takes the GL4...why doesn't anyone make a GL4 that you don't have to order over the internet?

Is there anywhere local that sells GL4?

Air cool VWs use any old 80-90 w gear oil. I don't know what GL4 is. You can buy it at any Pep-Boys.

Big thing to take note of, Nick...

VW transaxles are HYPOID transaxles, you should make sure that the fluid you get specifies that it is for Hypoid applications.

Not the right kinda fluid could cause some wear issues.

I found the Hypoid stuff at Pep Boys. It seemed to be advertised towards 4-wheeler gear boxes or something. I don't remember exactly.

I am, however, still curious about the transmission fluid/oil that I need for my frontier. Everyone on the frontier forums says GL4, but I know thats damn near impossible to find.

Nick, we can order it through Amzoil, but you have to get a case (12 quarts) of it.

Thats hard to believe. What do the Nissan dealers use ?  Can you not buy it at the dealerships ?  They have to service transmissions there I would hope.
My '86 Trooper used 30 W oil in the 5 spd. transmission.

Yeah Nissan has their own oil, but I think it was about $18 a quart, and for 5 qts, I was looking at my options!

Yeah, I know about those lousy trooper transmissions... the manuals just used motor oil! The automatics though can be a pain (just went through this with my brother in law)

Lousy transmission ??  I put about 180,000 miles (a lot of off road) on my Trooper with no problems other than 2 water pumps, EGR valve, 3 timing belts and normal service stuff. I wish I could buy a new one today just like it .  About 23-25 miles  per gal. on a great 2.3 engine. $10,500 W/air. One of the best rides I have ever owned. $18 a quart ???  Be glad you are not buying power steering oil for a early Audi. $35.00 a qt. If you used ATF (like most cars did and still do) you had about a month before it puked.

^^^ I remember that gold Trooper well.  Then Jim had it after you, I think?  I remember him "needing" to replace the fuel pump for a year or more of driving.   :D

She was a tank.

Indeed sold it to Jim.  I loved that car. It never let me down never in the 15 years I owned it.
