Super volvo has a throbbing idle and no power

« on: May 18, 2013, 07:49:52 PM »
I can't figure this out.  The Volvo goes rrrrmmm rrrrmm rrrrmm .at idle sounds and runs like heck.   Fuel pumps are rrrrrring.  We wasted today looking at trimming belt.  Seemed ok.   Can't find a vacuum leak. ..  Please save me.

940?  Be sure to check the plug wire and the cap and rotor, also clean the throttle body

Thanks Travis,   I do need to check the rotor and cp.  Ya its a 940.   All of a sudden started running bad

The plugs are/were worn  so I regapped them.  one plug did not  come out.  Car still ran rough

I unplugged the MAFS  and it ran better/smoother.   He is driving with the mafs unplugged right now.   I need to learn what a mafs does.  SC

That probably means a bad maf or an air leak,  the maf meters the air coming In the engine,  if there is a leak, it throws the computer off, if you unplug it the computer substitutes a value and that could make it run better

There is a black rubber thing the size of a golf ball..  One end went to throttle cam,  the other looks like a cable,to the trans or something

Maybe it goes to kick down transmission cable.  It has some holes it.  The engine did not seem to care whether I plugged the holes or not.  I'll take a picture of it.

This link shows the rubber thing.   It has a blue circle drawn at the adjust nut

Went over all the vac lines,  poured a bucket of water on everything to see if it sucked some water and sputtered.  No luck.  I tried reading voltage on the connecctor that goes to the MAF.  None of the 6 plug holes had voltage going in.  Weird.   I need to see if my saab MAF has any voltage to it.

The mass should have voltage,  use a voltmeter to check it

As I type my random musings about this wacky Volvo problem,  sometimes inspiration results.   Last nite, took out the idle air valve motor thing and cleaned it.  Today the throbby idle was way less bad. Today,  disconnected  IAC,  Idle throb went down even more.  But it was still there, just like 10 or 20 rpm  up'er down.

Question:  if my car idles best with out AIC.  do I need it?.
Am I wasting gas with IAC unplugged?
Does this point to another issue?  I got not CEL codes showing.  SC
