Smelly Alignment made easy

« on: January 13, 2013, 03:08:52 PM »
Since I buggered up the steering wheel position  with my 1st alignment,
I tried to fix it better.  Used some string and everything.
Now the steering wheel  is about even.  Still Pulls to right.  just not as bad.  SC

You can get it pretty close if you use a tape measure from the center line of the tread on the back and the front of the tire and match them up

the tread has been carefully removed to reduce weight and drag for improved MPGs

Ya.  I'm gonna try it with a level. Zip tied to steering wheel.   Maybe. That will help

I alway line the wheel up with the column trim,  much easier,  they make a tool to lock the wheel in place against the seat,  but with new laser alignment software it is no longer neccesary

If you don't have a steering angle sensor you can unbolt the steering wheel and move it if you only need the steering wheel straight,

Travis.  Your Mecanicing confidence is 78 percent higher than mine.  I tried taking the steering wheel off my burned out Saab.  And broke the horn buttons off.  I was also worried the air bag would blow and give me a concussion.   The only steer wheel I'm ok takin off is Stupie beetles.   Sc

I think volvos have holes behind the steering wheel and require a long torx bit t 30 to remove

What do you mean ??   Only necessary if you want your wheels/car to go straight down the road.  On a Bug ,you center-up the sector( there are marks for that) and then adjust the toe-in, camber etc.

I feel like my beetle goes straight down the road (as long as you keep steering it straight). I have never done one of these "alignment" magic shows that everyone is talking about.

Me either. Thats somewhere around "really off or really, really off. On a std Bug its hard to tell sometimes until about 10,000 miles. I have driven old link-pin Bugs with the front end worn out and "flopping" around and the dang things would drive perfect. Go figure
