lets learn about starters made by Saab

« on: September 21, 2010, 07:54:59 PM »
Part of my slave cyl failure involved starting the car in 1st and speed shifting into 3rd.  That seems to have wrecked the starter a little...which inturn cost me a $85 tow.   I take the starter off.  test it.  It works.  install it vrrrrrrr and sometimes the gear pops out and makes the fly wheel turn but like a frightened turtle,  it gear retracts and goes vrrrrr   .  if I do this taping  solinoid hot wire to the battery.  I can get the engine started.  Not something  I want to depend on..  since its hit or miss and takes 30 seconds

Questions.  why does a soliniod have 2 wires to it?  its grounded all it needs is a hot.
why wont the solenoid  stay erect and start my car?

Should I replace the soleniod for $40 or replace the whole starter for gosh know how much /  SC

Wacky starter.  some how the ground terminal to the solenoid is open.  the solenoid gets a little ground when the starter motor is juiced and turns.   That is why the gear pops out for a second then re-tracts.  I got to get a solenoid.   42 smackeroo's

I was whining at work about the starter and a buddy spoke up that he was goin to ATL  to the pull apart yard last weekend.  I wanted to go, but was in charge  parking for our Church Craft fair that Sat.   He went and Pulled a starter.  for 20 bucks.  SUper Score.    Got starter  on and it works.   Now I just got to find out were 5 and reverse  are  and line up the shifter coupling.  SC
