fuel filters

« on: November 13, 2010, 05:48:27 PM »
I have this 91 Saab with fuel injection.  It started choking out between 2k and 3K rpm.  The check engine light codes show everything for temp sensor to air mass flow meter to fuel pressure .  I took the fuel filter off and back flushed with the garden hose.   Lots of nasty came out and my grass died.  Shook out the water, blew through it. reinstalled  and Vrrrroom .  Saab ran much better.   But then it conked out when the car left the triangle.  waited a while and it restarted and drove ok.  maybe 70% better but still choking/boggin  out at 2k.  I bit the bucket or the bullet  and got a new filter. 21 bucks ..ouch.   Just installed it.  Car is running good but i have not given it a triangle road test.  By the way,  .  when you blow through a new filter there is barely any resistance.

Is it normal for a clogged fuel filter to cause erratic behavior?  This is the first time I have changed a filter and it made a difference.  Normally I change the filter when the fuel pump croaks.  SC

WOW.
Yes a filter will help that.
But that DID go through the pump.

Well I gave it run today,  sadly,   it still is acting up.  I can drive it but the fun is gone.
Maybe its the pump.
it seems weird that fuel pump would be acting up.  I thought they usually just  stop working.  Maybe sometimes it has enough pressure.  and it runs well.  other times it wimps out and makes my acceration studder.  sc

it is a saab :(,  I remember that temp sensor can be a problem,  also i remeber something about putting resitors in line with the fuel injectors or something,  maybe some good old internet research will help.  they also put the engine in and the hood on backwards

if that was in the fuel filter... makes me wonder whats floating around in the tank. I dont think Ive seen that much crud ever come out of a filter before.... I wonder if any of that got through and clogged a fuel injector...

Update:drove Saab all week.  Thurs morning,  going down hill.  engine would not go.  it idled,  but any pedal action made it choke.  I'm angled down hill.  Hwy 136 in front on me.  car dies ,  no battery , starter no go. Cant go forward.  My son and I push the car uphill into the grass.  Very good exercise.  I  call daughter...., nothing,  call house 23 times,....  nothing.  Then arrive two young fellas who just worked night shift in Bridgeport Ala.  They are going home  toward my house , so we jump in, they drop me off,  Cheers.

I wake sleeping beauty,  we take camry to the scene.  i learn that Camrys dont have  that little tow ring under the car.  Darn it.  Then Cop shows up.  They think we had a crash. I'm stressing a bit.  they leave.  Daughter takes Son to school.  Next an Alabama  Line man stops in big diesel dodge. We hook up Saab with orange $9.99 walmart tow rope.  Away we go.  Now car is home.  I charge up battery and engine starts.  My theory now is that the Alt is bad and the dash charge light no work.  Maybe alot of my misery is due to wack Alt.  Sc
