Fiberglass Repair and Bodywork

« on: December 12, 2010, 02:00:36 PM »
I finally bought a solid state controller for my 1969 Harley Davidson golf cart. I've slowly gathered up the missing parts and I've got 3 new batteries, 3 good used batteries and spare . . . Now I'm ready to strip it down and restore it.  The mechanical and electrical stuff I can handle from here.  I bought a small flux wire welder and I think I can even handle cutting out the rusty metal that used to be the battery boxes and weld in new angle iron there. I've got a buddy with and industrial soda blaster that will srip the body and frame down for me . . . so everything looks good to having it back together in time to cruise around BP-13 in it . . . but if I do the paint and bodywork on the fiberglass myself, it's still gonn'a look like a big pile of crap.

Anyone here good at Fiberglass work?  It's got a couple of busted places that need to be repaired and a couple previous fiberglass "repairs" that need to be fixed right.  Anyone want to take this job at a resonable price?

can you post pics of the fiberglass damage? I've done repair work on some kit cars in the past. Maybe something we can do in-house.

This one doesn't show the punched in places in the back, but I don't think they will be all that hard to repair.  Making this previous repair work and paint look decent might be another story . . .   ;D

I might be able to help out with this one, Zen... the big ugly bus in my garage is a whole lot less ugly now, and should be done with the welding soon.  It's been kinda slow going between lack of time and cold weather, but it's looking a lot better with the new nose.   :)

If we both make it to the Polar Bear Run, I'll talk to you more about it then.

Thanks to the magic of eBay, I scored a pair of "handles" that bolt on the sides beside the seats!  That completes all the "bling."  All the other trim is still there and just needs polishing.  One of the rear bumper brackets is bent but should be an easy fix, and right front bumper is tweeked, but again, should be an easy fix too.  The front bumper was painted red at one point, but I don't think it'll be a problem cleaning off the rest of the paint and shining it up!  I might have to get some stainless tubing and fabricate a cover for it.
