Do starter solenoids get weak

« on: March 12, 2011, 11:45:27 AM »
I'm getting confused on starter solenoids

Do they ever just get weak and can't pull the plunger back to engage the starter gear.

I have one  that appears to work when out of the starter  but then can't do the job when the connected to the starter.  SC

Is a bendex  the lever thing that gets pushed?  of is it the gear thing that operates the gear the pops out?  SC

I ment it as the lever that actuates the gear thingy...  LOL.
My point is that as the starter gets crusty, the sylinoid has a hardertime working, couple that with a slightly worn sylinoid an bamo, presto, no worky.

Ive ordered a replacement solenoid shipped  for $40.   I was torn between a $92+tax  starter at the parts store,  or a pull apart one on ebay for $40.  I'm going to be sad if  this don't fix me saab.   SC

Did you check to see if a local shop could rebuild the starter for you?
Did you take it to AutoZone and have them Check it for Free?
Just a thought.

Good Info AS.  Most time  A rebuild cost as much as a remanf at autozone..

I have gone to rossville  american alt and starter a few times for brushes and things.  I'm 90% sure its the solenoid.   When it gets here ,  Ill post results.

Seems like every week I/m thowing $50 bucks into one car of another.

I stuck the solinoid  on the starter motor.  Then I installed and turned the key......................Nothing.  ^%$^%%&.  I left the ignition on and the battery was dead.  stay tuned.
