cv joints

« on: June 17, 2011, 08:59:27 PM »
My kid was driving the accord and it clunked and stopped.  he says the front wheels dont turn any more.  would a crunched cv joint somehow keep the front wheels from rolling?  It was skidded up on the wrecker.  front wheels locked up.  SC

If both wheels locked up, I don't see how it could possibly be a CV joint.  It sounds like it's something in the differential or transmission.

acura had clicky axels
We replaced them today.  big job for me.
learned that old honda rotors are awfull to replace. axles were easy
so instead of 4 broke cars  we have 2..  accord and lumina

eh honda rotors arent hard.. at the most they are held on with a screw. the axles in my opinion are harder. oh and dont forget to bolt the long axle's brace up in there good. didnt do that once and it popped out of the tranny while driving down hixson pike... was fun laying up under it trying to pop it back in and CAREFULLY driving it home to tighten up the brace. Lesson learned.

^^^^ Actually, depends on the generation of Accord....

For one body style, I believe it was the one around 97-98, they used a rotor that was bolted/pressed to the hub instead of the slip on, screw aligned ones (that, incidentally they used on all the ones before and since.)  I remember years ago they took a brake job from an hour to more like 3 or 4 hours, and they could be a real pain to do..... silly things automakers do.....  ::)

One of the former Honda techs at Pep Boys years ago knew a little trick involving an air hammer, long punch and just the right spot and he could do them quickly.  He would never do it while another tech was looking though....  :D

I took off the the whole assembly with the rotor on and went around town to the brake shops.  One place put in on a press and gave up cause he thought it would ruin the bearings.  the 2nd place tried to beat it into submission and gave up.  They said I had to but it back on the car and they had a tool or puller that would pop it off.  Cars back together.  I will take it back to the shop to try again next week with it on the car.  sc
