Anti lock learning

« on: May 10, 2012, 07:03:36 AM »
This 94 Volvo Would pull to the right sometime after stoping when it was raining.  I pretty much changed all the brake parts and thought it was fixed.  It happened yesterday again in the rain and It felt like antilock was wigging  out on the front right.   Each wheel  has gear looking thing on the inside with a sensor.  These gear things are rusty as hell. And I'm thinking that they hold water at slow speed and fake out the antilock and that is the problem.   If the right wheel is pulling that means the left wheel thinks it is locked up right?   Have I been focused on the wrong wheel or what?

It is possible the water is getting into the sensor

Clean the rust off. I've seen other cars with the gear ring and the sensor is like a magnet that reads when a large chunk of metal moves by it. When there are lots of chunks (like a gear) moving by, it tracks the speed. It's when it reads differently that it knows one wheel is slipping or locked up. The sensor could be bad or the gear could be too rusty for it to read. Cleaning is cheaper.

You'd think it would have a fail safe if it were the sensor...

I'll take bald tires actually locking up in the rain and causing the ABS to activate for 200.

Different sizes?  That may be your problem there SC.  Since ABS measures wheel speed to detect lockup and different size tires rotate at different speeds.....

I'm just sayin'  :D

Could be you have front tires that are a different dia. If you have a larger dia. tire, say on the right front and a smaller dia. tire on the left front, the right tire would be traveling at less RPM at a giving road speed. With Volvo's little cog gears, would this not give the ABS acid reflux ?
