740 Volvo with a Supra engine!

« on: September 02, 2010, 09:45:57 PM »
One of the guys at the shop just finished his project and these are the pic's.  He had the Volvo with the factory red block and turbo that started smoking...then the 7MGTE fell into our laps as partial payment for a 1JZ twin turbo swap on a Supra...now we had a 6cyl turbo engine and trans without a home sooooo, in it went! ;D  We had to make the engine/trans mounts and the oil pan, other than that it went in pretty easy! 8)  The car is WAY more fun with power!

Well now there is a switch. I know at one time you could a kit for a Volvo 240 to install a 289 CI or a 302 CI Ford to replace the really bad V6 Euro engine that turned into a complete Turkey.  I drove a 302 model. It was a killer and hell on the rear tires. You should have seen the looks you got to see a less than expected Volvo blowing by your Mustang HO ;D ;D ;D

Wow,  I cant even imagine how to do that.  Do you Cut and splice the drive shaft.  Isn't it front wheel drive?,  How to you make a oil pan.  I cant even get stock oil pans not to leak. I'd probaly get it all done and the hood wouldn't close and it would have 4 reverse speeds and one forward sc

740's were rear drive as was the 240's.On the 240 I'm not sure about the drive line set-up but it did use the Volvo rear end.   There was a lot of room in the engine compartment and I didn't hear anything about having oil pan  problems. The owner told  me that the 302 Ford  engine and the 4 cyl. 2.3 Volvo weight was about the same. The kit I belive came with a wiring harness to match up the to the Volvo.

The oil pan had to be modified from a mid sump to a rear sump.  We cut the mid sump off, extended the oil pump pick up and made a new sump that cleared the subframe without cutting, probably wouldnt have to do that with a Fox body Mustang double sump 5.0 motor.  Kevin measured and made the engine mounts from steel and billet aluminum.  For the trans mount he just used a combination of the Volvo and Supra mount that completly looked factory.  A modified factory Supra intercooler mounted infront of the Volvo radiator.  The shifter sat about 3 inches too far forward so he made a custom offset shifter shaft to clear the hole in the tunnel like factory.  The Volvo has a 2 piece driveshaft with a support bearing in the middle, he mocked up the shaft in the car and brought it to a driveline shop here in town and they were able to graft the two with no problems. Stock rear end.  The speedo runs off a sensor in the rear end so that was set and the stock tach. was used with a electronic tach. adapter.  The coolant temp gauge just needed a Volvo sending unit in the Supra engine.  No a/c or power steering to worry about, a cool 3 inch stainless side exit exhaust with V band clamped cat. and test pipe...passed emissions without a converter ;D.  That engine is sooo smooth running, you would never know it was a solid mount..no bad vibs at all!  The whole thing came out really great and only in a couple months from start to finish in his spare time!!   Now he's busy working on his Corrado. 8)

How in the world did you get the car through emission ck without a converter or did you do what I think you did. They wouldn't even talk to Anthony when he tried to get his Mexi Bug  through and it passed but it didn't have a converter. It failed ??? ???

Anthony and i talked about his.  What killed it was that it was a 1998 model.  Anything 1996 or later requires a federally mandated OBDII diagnostic plug-in to check for fault codes.  His beetle, being a non-US model vehicle, had no such plug.  Therefore, he failed the test simply because there was no plug-in.  And, yeah, i don't imagine the tailpipe test would fail.   ::)

I assume the volvo is an older model, tailpipe only tester. But, i don't know for sure.

Then, doesn't matter what's under the hood, just what leaves the exhaust pipe.

Yep..just a tailpipe test.  Most of the time when you go through the test center and the tester slides the mirror under a vehicle to see the converter they are no where near the right place.  I guess they pass you on the converter just cause they don't know what one is or should look like, after that they just care about the numbers comming out the tail pipe.  In Atlanta it would be a different story, they are closer to the full on IM240 testing...would of had to run on a dyno and had several parts of the engine sampled (rpm,load,temp...) but not in good ol Chatt-town!! ;)
