Now . . . just gott'a bleed 'em.

Or so I thought.   ::)  Somewhere along the way I put a kink in the parking brake cable on the right side.  It was holding the parking brake all the time.  Couldn't find one in stock loacally, so I had to order one.  It was 11 bucks but I paid 13 bucks to have is shipped FedEx 2 day . . . but they didn't ship it until yesterday, it should be here tomorrow when I get home from work.  I have to tear back into the right rear breaks and install this new cable . . . then I have bleed 'em and I'm done.   :o  Well, except for the fact that I realized someone had removed a leaf from the springs on the new rear end.  I've also got to swap out the springs with the ones from old rear end or I'll be running uphill.  I "SHOULD" be able to drive it over to Stevenson Saturday evening after I get home from my family reunion.   8)

It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it.  I hear that Smelly Cat packed up and moved towards Ringgold, so I guess I'm it.   ;D

I took the springs off the old rear end last night and have them ready go back on the new-to-me rear end that's on the truck.  My new brake cable was waiting on me when I got home this afternoon.  Joy wanted to go to an antique auction in Summerville tonight . . . sounded like a good excuse not to work on it, so I didn't.  I'll work on it tomorrow afternoon.  I still should have time to get it on the road in time to head over to Stevenson Saturday evening.   8)

Two weeks later and my two hour brake job is finally finished.  Had to call in the big guns for help (Carla, Jesse and Justin).  Carla and Jesse pretty much changed out the right side springs with just a little coaching from me.  While I was hooking up the new parking brake cable (I'll get to that in a minute) Carla and Justin changed out the left side spring.  Carla originally set out to be a pre-K special ed teacher, but I think she needs to change her career path to a mechanic.  I was impressed!

The only big problem we ran into was the new parking brake cable.  I couldn't find one locally, so I ordered one, ship to home, from AutoZone.  I SHOULD have went to GM dealer and ordered a good one.  This one was made in China . . . and guess what?  I had to modify it to make it work!  It has three prongs that push in as you slide it through the hole in the backing plate and once in place the spread back out and lock it in.  The problem is the gap between the end of the prongs and piece that sets on the back of the backing plate was only about half the thickness of the backing plate, so they couldn't pop back out on the other side.  I had to use a cut-off wheel on the clips that hold it in the backing plate and make them short enough to actually clip into the backing plate.

Other than that, everything well.  It rolls good and stops good.  Now I just have to clean up the mess in the yard.

Story Wrap Up -- By the time I got the yard cleaned up and put all my tools away that Saturday morning I was beat.  I was going to rest an hour or so, take a shower and head to Red Top Mountain.  I fell asleep.  I woke up around 1:00 PM and figured by the time I got my family reunion, every else would be leaving, so I just skipped it, packed up my camping gear, took a shower and went to Stevenson. (by the way, I got to Stevenson Saturday evening just as Dr. Fieldinggood was making his last announcement of the day . . . but I did make it to Stevenson . . . and back)

A few miles from the house I looked down at my speedometer and I'm doing over 70!  Looked up at my GPS, it's says I'm doing 52.  Hummmm.   ???   I guess this new rear end is geared a little lower than my old one.  No wonder it seemed like I had gained 20 horse power!  I thought it would really kill my gas mileage.  I filled up in Trenton.  A couple of days ago I filled up again and figured my gas milage.  22.51 mpg.  I usually get 22 to 23 mpg, so I don't guess it affected it that much after all.  Maybe it's because I tend not to drive as fast now . . . who knows?  Who really cares?  As long as I don't have to walk, I know I don't.   ;D
