Gears to convert your hit-and-miss engine to a sideshaft

« on: August 12, 2012, 10:12:04 PM »
I was looking for hit and miss engines on eBay and ran across this gear set to "convert your hit and miss engine to a sideshaft" . . . I'm not sure what that means, but for some strange reason, I think I might have several of these gear sets.   ???

I have a good friend who builds 1/4 scale model "hit-miss" engines out of old cast-iron vertical compressor's and uses these parts. I guess I have supplied him a 5gal bucket full over the years.  I don't know how this guy uses these part but this Mod. doesn't make it a NON-hit &miss engine alone, besides who would want to hack up a valuable antique engine . If it  was a car it would be like putting a Rabbit engine in a original V-12 Packhard.

I'd be interested in seeing one of those . . .

I've been trying to dream up a way to convert a VW engine to a Hit and Miss.  I've been thinking you could just use one side and put a really weak spring on the intake valve . . . one that would be strong enough to close it, but weak enough that if the exhaust valve was closed on the downstroke it would suck it open, then all you would have to do is devise a centrifical device that would pull the rocker shaft back until it slowed to a minimum speed, then seat it.  Drill a 50 pound cast iron weight to fit the pressure plate bolts and bolt it to the flywheel . . .  ???  Hummmmm . . . it could work!

Thats easy. Drive a machine thats powered by a Type-4 engine. It will convert itself in a few 1,000 miles.   DIY hit&miss. How cool is that ?

The only problem with that is shortly after it converts its self to a hit and miss, it contiues the process and converts its self to a MISS and miss.

And that would be a BIG HIT with a lot of owners and VW shops. ;D
