You are right Jason. I forgot about the front wheel brgs. The real sad thing about that car was that when we were able to drive it anywhere without something breaking it drove like a champ. It was comfy, fast and good looking.
But get this. When I traded the thing off at Village Volvo the car was wholesaled with some other cars to a used car place in Fla. Good deal!
Now if you can belive this, A used car dealer from Rossville had gone to a big sale in Fla. and dang if he didn't buy the Dasher and brought back here and sold it. It showed up at my shop one morning on the "hook" along with the new owner who found out that I had once owned it and could repair it. I nearly had a heart attack. I told him the history of the Dasher and that he could take it back to where he found it and that I would not touch it with a ten foot pole. The last time I saw that car was on the front page of the paper up-side down on Scenic Hy-way around Lookout Mtn. Totaled at Last, Totaled at Last. Great God Almighty Totaled at Last. I smiled the rest of the day.
S.C. The only water-cooled VW I liked was my black '83 GTI . I was letting it warm up one frosty morn when I heard a loud bang out in the driveway. I ran out to find a big cloud of steam coming out under the hood. The rad. fan switch had gone bad and the cooling fan didn't come on. Blew up the res.bottle and blew the ends off that wonderful plastic rad. GTI had 900 miles on it. For some reason the engine lived. VW fixed under warr. The ONLY other thing that happened to the GTI was when I was giving it a bath one day I managed to wash the paint off with a mild car wash soap and clear water. VW re-painted under warr. GTI had about 6000K on it. I was disappointed but not suprised. After all this GTI was built by U.A.W. at the Westmorland Pa. right here in the good old U.S.A. Sold the car when it had 21,000 K on it.
O' yeah , Have I told how much I love water-cooled VWs
I had more trouble with those two cars than I ever had with my 7 Bugs/Vans put together. You would think VW would go ck. out Honda or Volvo and see how they do it right.
I will keep driving my old '92 Volvo until it dies. Have right at 190,000 K and it just keeps going. Everything still works and passes emission test just find. 32mpg is not bad for this old tank.
OK,OK enough of this crap
