Window Tinting

I'm about to take my 2004 Jetta Wagon out to the Southwest. We really need to get the windows tinted. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to go?

All of our cars that have gotten the windows tinted have all been done by Altamere on Brainerd Rd. in front of Sir Gooney's Golf and Games.  They have done a quality job for a decent price.  When we did have a problem with some bubbles, they fixed it with no problem.  Also, the installed the keyless entry in my Golf, and had to fix a bug in it several weeks later, at no extra cost.
But maybe the reason we got a good price is because the woman behind the desk used to work with my wife at Erlanger...
I haven't been anywhere else, so maybe someone else has a suggestion.

I use Grant's Auto Glass on Market St. Jerry Grant and his wife have been doing the window tinting there for about 15yrs and do excellent work. I've had several vehicles done by them and haven't had the first problem. Talk to Jerry and mention the Volkswagen club. You might be surprised.

I went with Altamere - actually, they aren't Altamere anymore. $199 for full tinting. Made a huge difference on my trip out West this Summer. The 115 degree temps in Utah were handled with ease.

All that I am going to say is that if you paid under 200 for a tint you didn't get the best. And I know it probley doesn't matter but I got my car tinted and man they used that johnson tint and the passenger side window looks like water on it at night, but from the outside it isn't noticiable... Well I am going to try the OASIS I hear they only use the best tint, lumar.. Thanks..
And as far as altamere i will never go back there. I baught a brand new 1997 nissan truck had it for about 11k miles and took it there to get the windows tinted, yes they did a good job and that was when they used nothing but lumar but they cut my weather striping up around my windows in the truck both doors.. And they tryed to tell me my truck was old that is why the weather striping was comming off because the age. And then agreed to only pay for one door which they messed up. You gotta Watch em...

Misty and I had ours done recently. Misty went with AltaMere (look for their coupon in the paper. $25 or $50 off.) and I went with Fasttech on Brainerd across from Adcox. We were both happy with ours and each others. Man, AltaMere has got this tint with ceramics technology that allows almost no heat to get through! Don't ask how much!

The place on Brainerd next to Sir Goony's isn't Altamere any more. The job they did on my Jetta was near perfect - just a couple almost imperceptible bubbles (about the size of the head of a pin) on a passenger window. Even if it doesn't last forever, the $199 job was worth it for the trip out West.

I don't remember the brand tint they use, but they only use one kind and refuse to use any other. I think they seem cheap because it's a small mom-and-pop shop and they probably gave up their Altamere franchise so they wouldn't have to keep paying the royalties.

You know, it CAN be done by a fairly patient do-it-yourselfer. I've done 2 cars myself and the results, short- and long-term have been as good as any shops, if I do say so myself. You get the squeegie/spray bottle/knife kit at the FLAPS and roll or two of tint (I think one will do the average sedan). It's really not that hard. Kind of like applying really big decals to a (again, really big) model kit. For $35-40 you can give it a try. If you aren't happy, peel 'em off and go pay someone else.

Why did I have the Sebring's done the other week? Hell! I'm not gonna do my own tint again! The first two times took ten years off my life!!!

The day I had my windows tinted, it was about 95 degrees with 1000% humidity.  I felt sorry for the guy crawling around in the car doing it. I thought $199 was pretty cheap considering the time and effort it took. I would consider doing a VW bus myself because the windows are flat and fairly easy to get to. But a Jetta Wagon is a completely different story!
