Which do I choose?

« on: April 05, 2007, 10:23:57 PM »
So I am going to have my 78 westy and my 98 mexi at the new house... but I need to choose a "project car" as well... I have narrowed it down to 3 choices... help me choose!

1. 1973 super beetle. Needs body work and LOTS AND LOTS of electrical work. Does not currently run. Will need lifted back up in order to tow, and will probably not clear my driveway.

2. 1981 Diesel Rabbit. Has a blown head gasket and been sitting a few years now. it's a rust bucket but ran great before... will need to recruit Kyle to help me get it back on the road. Would be a great daily commuter and winter beater (the rust is too far to really go back and fix). would also get 50 mpg!

3. 1972 westy. Has been stripped of most of its westy-ness, windows dont roll up, slider door falls off, no canvas in the pop top, nor latches to hold it down. Bus actually runs great, but again lots of rust.

It seems to me that you may have worded your poll wrong. Are you looking for a project car or somethingyou can drive in the winter that has heat and that gets 50 miles to the gallon. I myself am not into water-cooled "projects" but as for a daily driver I will be buying an '08 VW deisel when they come out, hopefully the Passat wagen as that is a tough looking ride, even for a wagen. But if I wanted a project Dub to work on it would be the '73 super as parts are far more expensive for the bus. It also sounds like it needs less work. This is JMHO.

yeah, the poll got messed up and i cant edit it :( so if you vote for the bus, just say so!

I dont really know what i want... the bus is the only one of the three that is driveable.. it's all cosmetic work, and i really dont want to fix the rust as i will end up with a whole new bus if so! I do want something that i can drive in the winter and will get good gas mileage and i dont care about road salt on it... and those are all things that the bug is not... but at the same time... i would really like to have the bug fixed up so i can run it on the track...

just not really sure what to do... i have a couple days to decide i suppose.

Tough call.  How much of a project do you want to kill yourselve over ?
Think about it, the hassel of draging the thing up here. If it was a "split" window bug or some other rare VW, it would be a no brainer. It seems to me that with all the rust and other things you are talking about ,
you would be spending a pile of money on something thats not that rare.
My choice would be to grab the engine and tranny out of the camper for a spare to work with when your current camper lays down on you. Maybe even the engine/ tranny from the Super Beetle.  Junk or sell the rest. There seems to be a few cars and vans up in this area that would be a better choice for a project with a whole lot less problems to deal with.
VWGirl, All this BS is just my opinion. You will have to deside which coal truck you want to deal with.

WOW, I wasn't trying to hurt her feelings so quick. But now that you let the Kudzu out oif the bag, I actually wouldn't bother with anything for a project car that was later than a '68. But this is also my opinion and am possibly on a different budget for things like this.

Oh No !  I'm not trying to hurt her feelings either but she is young and anything older than 1985 is a really old vintage VW.
Sometimes you just to be realistic and pratical. I have seen this very thing happen so many times. I would rather spend a little more money on something that has a chance to recover and enjoy.  What do you think ?
Besides I hate  Tetnus shot

I totally agree, Those vehicles are not what I call treasures that should require a lot of restoration. There is a fine line in knowing when it's just too late for a vehicle to be restored. Most times the parts on these cars are worth more in value than the entire car.
By the time you get done fixing everything you spent on some of those projects you mentioned, you could by something really nice that might not have so much body work in it. Everyday you see someone that put $30,000 into a car and end up selling it for only $18,000. Don't buy a car with only a little time for judgement. Check out craigslist.org they always seem to have some decent Dubs on there.

Most all of those watercooleds look pretty haggard.

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/299895622.html <--Good deal

That one just makes me mad, but you win some and lose some. It was original advertised a while back for $600 with a boatload of extra parts. Its in the same state and $500 more less the parts it came with. I was just bitter that it didnt sell to me

ummm.... guess i thought from my other posts this would be clear... these 3 are part of the 18 vws of mine that reside in fl in addition to the 2 in GA... i dont want to buy a "new" vw... i want to bring another of mine up there... and i have to make the drive regardless, so may as well bring one of my cars with me... and i prefer late models... whether they are worth it to you or not...

you can't hurt my feelings that easy...

My Bad, I thought you were looking at a new project to buy. In this case you only need to askyourself, which project would best to suit your needs with as little out of pocket expense as possible. Since it's getting warmer out now, the water cooled could sit and maybe the bus that runs would be the best choice. Then maybe a later trip down to Florida might have you bringing the watercooled back for the next winter. Sorry for my inexperiance of your situation.
