I was just wondering who sells VW bug parts like exhaust, master cylinders, alternators and of course some chrome stuff too.

I think, in Chuck's defense, it's a hard way to make a dime...

Over the years, more and more mail order of air-cooled parts have made it difficult for the little guys to buy in quantities that actually allow them to make a profit.

I have a feeling he makes more off of a set of brake pads than a muffler and all the stuff to put it on with... and the pads take up a lot less space on the shelf.

I've dealt with Chuck ever since I've been into air-cooled VWs (about 20 years or so).  A lot of folks say he's an @$$, but I've always felt like he treated me fair.  Can't really ask for much more.  In the begining, his prices were competitive with mail order and the parts were good quality.  Over the years, the quality of the parts started to decline, the prices started going up and the result was everybody bringing junk parts back to him demanding their money back.  More and more mail order competition drove the profit margins down to the point that he really doesn't have time to put up with the crap.  If I had a business where I could make a 40% profit on Honda brake pads why would I want to mess with a junk part that I'm going to make 10% profit on and half the time have to mess with taking back the part because it was bad?  I really wish he still stocked high quality VW parts at prices competitive with mail order places like he did 20 years ago, but the reality of it is, those days are long gone.  I don't really blame Chuck for gettin' out.

Zen,
The scenario that you describe has been my experience with Lamar at American Foriegn the past 6 years. Parts are as good or better quality than most online sources, his prices are typically the same or lower than online and he has no shipping charges as long as you can wait on his normal delivery schedule.
Lamar is a great guy and he just will not stock the items he has had poor quality issues with in the past.  He will order them for you, but will explain fully before that they are crap and you will not be able to return them should they be of poor quality.  I always ask him if he has had a lot of returns of this or that and he has always been straight with me.
