Bugtech,   rabbits have poor electric wiring?  OR should I convert it to electric?  Is 81 rabit convertible still a girls car or after some age do Rabbitts covert into manly cars?  SC

91k miles

I'll put money on the odometer being broken.  A few years ago I looked at several early 80's Rabbit convertibles.  Regardless of price or condition, they all had between 89 to 99 thousand miles.  Then I started realizing the odometers weren't racking up miles as I test drove them . . . the speedometer worked fine, but the odometer didn't budge.  They must use the same odometer gears as a Super Beetle.

I consider the Cabrio's, the mk3 vert, more of a girls' car than the Cabriolets.

If you are looking into getting that one here are some tips about them.
Like Zen said the odometer is 99% most likely broken, it can be fixed though however illegally.
Look for rust in the floorpans and strut towers.
Make sure that it has the boot for when the top is down.
An '81 should still have the radiator which you have to fill by putting coolant into the radiator rather than an reserve tank which makes putting correct level of coolant in a little harder.
If top hasn't been taken care of, then you can probably expect to replace it or it most likely leaks.
Also check out http://www.cabby-info.com tons of good about the Cabbys there.

I cooling off  on the Rabbit a bit.   Maybe $1600 is too much.  I need to take it for a spin.  Is a 81 rabbit in good shape worth $1600?
My son and daughter both said.  " Is it Automatic?",   I think I want it more than anyone else around here.
