no, no roller rockers.... (though I can dream!)

However, if you remember about me ranting a few days ago about how I could SEE exhaust coming straight down from that side (leaking exhaust seals between heater box and head??) Well, now I'm not so sure that was the problem...

first thing I noticed was that there was no standing oil in the head or pushrod tubes... (kind of expected to see alot of wetness here, no pun intended) The oil light hasn been coming on while the motor is running, but it does before starting.

secondly, the second rocker arm from the front of the car had just enough gap between it and the valve to make a very slight tap tap tap feeling when moving it.... remember this for later!

I thought to myself... what are the odds that the head bolts are loose? yea crazy notion, but I thought hey, I'll give it a try. So, out comes the 15mm socket, onto the head bolts it goes, ad WHATDAYA KNOW! I get almost 1/4 turn out of 3 of the 4 bolts in the valve cover (couldnt get to one that was partially hiden behind the rocker arm assembly towards rear of motor)

So at this point I'm thinking... lets recheck that gap that we had earlier in that one rocker arm to valve..... and ITS GONE!

Now I'm thinking...
1: Could this slight looseness in the head bolts cause an exhaust leak?
2: How hard is it to take off the needed tin to get to the rest of the head bolts?
3: How bad could these valves be gapped right now???

Do you know how to adjust the valves and in what order?  Do you know how to torque the head nuts and in proper order and the amount of torque you are supposed to have ?  If you don't know how you are playing with fire. You can overtorque the heads very easely and cause  damage. At this point , I think you need to get some help before you get into serious trouble. I don't think you want to try to remove engine tin with the engine installed without help.
I can tell you right now that your valve adjustment has changed due to you yanking on the head nuts. You are supposed to torque the nuts to 25 ft pds (8) no more no less.  God only knows what the torque is now. Your engine will more than likely run worse now that the valves are too tight.
Like I said ,Get some help.

Yes I know how...(I completely rebuilt the 1600 in my 1974 super beetle which included new bearings, bigger cam, new heads, and 88.5mm pistons) but that being over 12 years ago I dont have most of those tools anymore.

But I am always up for some help if anyone who has the tools would like to help me out with this project since I am still learnng about these type 4 engines (and reading my bentley manual). I would def. like to learn all there is to know about these beasts...

 :D
