And in this day and time you would be sitting on the side of the road in the middle of the night with your hands in the air while a bunch of "Dunderheads" start to have a relationship with your billfold and other stuff, camera, cellphone etc. Bottom line here is if you are driving something that ain't up to snuff, carry a really big gun and know how to use it. You could use it to defend yourself or you could put your "Ride" out of its misery. :o

I don't need a gun.  I've found a trick multi-step trick to avoid the situation you described.  Step 1 - Drive a POS that no theif would be caught dead in.  Step 2 - Forget to bring your wallet.  Step 3 - Only carry cheap 35mm disposable cameras.  Step 4 - Carry an old cell phone that looks like a brick and weighs about as much as one.  Step 5 - Break down on the side of I-75 just north of I-10 . . . You can sit there for hours and no one will bother you!  Trust me on that one.  Been there, done that.  I did make it home eventually that time too!  All I had to do was repair a U-joint in my 70 Chevy truck using the piston from an old bus wheel cylinder I found in my glove box.   :o ::) ;D

Zen, Ain't it fun to fix things around the the house with VW parts.  I overhauled my old "Lazy Boy " with valve cover bushings and rubber seals from a Rabbit and then repaired   the blower motor on my dryer with a gen. bearing and a 6 Volt starter bushing along with re-wiring the dryer element with the red # 30 wire from a old VW harness. I got another 2 years out of them with no further problems. ::) ;D

At least I don't drive my "Lazy-Boy" or dryer on the street.  Its sort of a MacGyver kind of thing. Zen is eaten up with it but he ain't alone and besides  our "stuff" works.  ;D ;D

I like your way of thinking.  What a flight that would be. Look how cool that would be watching those funny "Things" falling on KC's Jap Bug while I'm partaking a few "snorts" of  refocused Uncle Bens  favorite  while kicked back in my Lazy-Boy. 8) 8)

Well, this is seeming like a giant cluster at this point.  Sunday morning we took Myrtle back to the garage to be looked at for the horrible noise she was making.  I thought it was brakes, but the phone call I got this morning was disappointing.

Apparently, after the alternator and battery getting fried trying to make it home, I'm told now there is some issue with the tie rods and ball joints.  Something wasn't tightened correctly when they re-assembled the car and has now caused more problems and some damage.  Made my calls to the owner where the clutch work was done and where she is now and just waiting to see how this all shakes out.

Should have just taken it to Rick.  Lesson learned the hard way.

What he said, Shannon....

For the record, I have known so many messes begun with VWs that started up with the phrase "I needed to save some money"....  There is no way in hell I would crawl around in my driveway/ on the ground to put a clutch in a cabrio for $100... absolutely no way..... my time and physical effort are worth more than that.

Oh, and about the alternator battery thing.... loose ground cable, maybe?  Prob left undone/loose when the trans was put back in.  Seen that a few times.  Again, usually by a mechanic not familiar with VWs.

I'm not so sure that would even do it on a Bug anymore. Its gotten to a point that I would rather be sucking up on a Toddy and watching. I don't buy nearly the "Band-Aid's I use to while working on some of these little"Tetus Impregnated"darlings.
