VW Iltis and the Chattanooga Ducks

« on: December 06, 2010, 09:52:35 AM »
After the southside parade and lunch at Champy's, I went back to Main st and wandered around. I ended up in Estate of Confusion- the junk shop at 301 main st. I stayed in there for quite a while and began talking to a guy collecting all sorts of random pieces for a sculpture he was making. It came up I was into VWs and drove in the parade. He talked about how he been considering a VW for while, and that he had driven HIS duck in the parade. Turns out he is the owner of Chattanooga Ducks. We talked about all sorts of VWs and amphibious vehicles. I mentioned the schwimmwagen and he had never heard of it. He then began talking of some hard to pronounce vehicle that VW made that looked like a Thing, was amphibious and 4 wheel drive. I was drawing a blank and he couldn't remember the name. He said he had seen them on ebay and was kinda wanting one to add to the Duck's fleet. We exchanged emails and went our separate ways.

I get an email from him this morning saying it was an Iltis and he had a link to the info on it. Looks pretty cool and a quick samba classified search shows there is one for sale...for $7500! I emailed him the link back with some encouragement to add it to his fleet and our VW community!

Well that Dude is going to have his water wings on if he wants to float a Iltis. This little critter is not  amphibious but it is a very good 4x4 using a Rabbit engine w/carb , a modified Audi 100 front wheel drive tranny with a drive shaft going to a diff. on the rear axle. It was built for the German military to replace the DKW Munga. Canada built these for the Canadian military  under lic. from the Germans and were called Bomdiers(?) You can now import to the US the surplus stock along with where to get parts from Canada.
Click on Google or You-Tube and type in Iltis for photos, history and vidios. I would love to have one.

Very interesting... I read the history and it said it was born after a European amphibious jeep-like vehicle project had stalled and Germany wanted to do its own thing. After further investigation, they dropped the amphibious requirement...oh well. I guess he'll have to pony up for a schwimmwagen to get an amphibious VW...or he could get a Seep GPA!

Maybe he'll still get a Iltis and bring it to Chattanooga

Which reminds me...do we have any type of event insurance?  Or a disclaimer that once vendors/campers/entrants have paid, it's final?  It's only a matter of time...

Crap.   >:(

Tell him just to leave the keys in it, and walk into the Krispy Kreme for for a sec and get a donut.  I'll bring it right back.   ;D

I want and always wanted a Iltis when I first heard of and saw one. I should  sell everything and buy one. At least it has a top and heater. Then I could kick Nick and his Baja bug in the butt.  ;D ;D   Sounds like great sport
