VW Brazil ending Bus Production

« on: October 25, 2012, 08:58:01 AM »
Much like the Mexican Beetle in 2003 which ended a 65 year production run, the bus proved to have almost as much staying power. Tougher safety regulations in Brazil will force VW to end production of the Kombi, a model still based on the Type 2 bay window (although now water-cooled).

I knew when they dropped the air-cooled engine three or four years ago it was just a matter of time.   :(

They went for the in-line water cooled (Golf) engine) and not the "water boxer"( thank goodness).  Wonder what a turbo version or TDI would have done for it. Shucks !! I might even go for something like that. At least it would get out of its own way ;D ;D ;D

Seems like airbags and anti brakes would not cost that much to add.  air bags sound like a good idea in a snub noise bus.   On that inline engine.  did it hook up like Pinto engine on a bug?  or did they stick the engine and tranny of the gold in the back?

In the rear, fore and aft. Airbag ? I think the air bag would have to be as large as a Tempa-petic(?) mattress. ;D

An airbag on a bus would probably do more harm than good.   :o

When you look down and see the headlight bucket above your toes, you know that anything the bumper doesn't catch is going to hit your feet next.  Knowing that, you tend to drive a lot more responsibly.   8)

An air bag would give a lot of people a false sense of security and, while they may "help" if you are in an accident, the total number of accidents would probably shoot through the roof!   ;D

Here it is, the Last Edition Kombi from VW Brazil. A limited run of 600, individually numbered, and a sticker on the back and side that says "56 anos". About $35,600.

Funny thing about Spanish- to tell your age, you say "I have 56 years" instead of I am 56 years old. The other funny thing is that years is "an~os" with the tillda over the "N". "Anos" without the "~" means anus. So saying you have 56 anos is much different than saying your age...
