Volkswagen...The Honest Car

Someone gave me a very old dealer brochure. I have carefully scanned it and added it to the gallery: http://www.volksfolks.org/gallery/vwlit/thehonestcar/

I've looked and looked but there's no year anywhere on this thing. I'm pretty sure it's 60s though, and on the back it's stamped South Land Motors, 2701 S. Broad Street, Chattanooga, TN. The name Harry S. Bunch also appears.

Anyone know more about it?

Southland Motors was a VW/ BMC dealership starting in the early '50s on South Broad St. The dealership was owned by Dan Clippinger Sr. and his son Dan Jr.  BMC was dropped in the late '50s and a new VW dealership now renamed Southland Volkswagen was built in '63-'64 on Brainerd Rd where the Volvo/Infinity dealership is today. My proper VW training began here in July '64. The business was sold in early '70s.
Russ, Look very closely around the cars and you might find a date. These old brochures were air-brushed and the artist put the date around the bottom of the car. Looking at the car your brochure dates from '58 thru '60.
I knew Harry Bunch. He was one of two salesmen down on Broad St. I don't recall how long he stayed at Southland. Harry later had used car lots and worked all over town.
You have a nice piece local VW history

A Beetle is a Beetle is a Beetle . . . right? Like David said, looking at the cars in the brochure gives enough details to narrow it WAY down.  Without looking anything up and not being an expert on old Beetles, I can narrow it down to a three year block of time pretty easily.  It's after the Oval Window era, so it's got to be 58 or later.  The generator stand is part of the block, so it's earlier than a 40 horse which debuted in 1961.  So, the Bugs featured in the brochure would be either '58, '59, or '60 models wouldn't they?

Other clues that may help narrow it down even more (if you know when these features started or ended):

the humped gas tank
the two spoke steering wheel
80 MPH top speed on the speedometer
the wiper arms
the tail lights
the turn signal switch
Solex 28 PCI carburetor

There's lots of other details to work with that should pretty much date it without it being dated.  I'd bet if David "studied" on it in person, he could get it down to an exact model year . . . and tell us if it was early or late that year!

Regardless of when it was printed, it's a pretty cool brochure.  Being that it was stamped by an early VW Salesman from Chattanooga makes it even cooler!  Having someone on our message board who actually knew the guy . . . priceless!   8)

I have found in my archives some early 35mm slides and prints I took at old Southland VW and at VW school in Maryland in the '60s. When I figure out how to use my new scanner and how to post them on the board,I will get them up there. I more than likely will need some help considering my computer skills. My scanner doesn't have timing marks and I cannot find a dip stick, so I'm in trouble

Don't feel bad, my daughter has a 97 Isuzu Rodeo . . . It doesn't have a distributor, much less any timing marks and I can't find a transmission dipstick . . . or a place to add fluid if I did find the dipstick.  I think it's all part of a technology conspiracy aimed at wiping out us do-your-selfers.     That's why I keep driving Homer . . . and laughing in Bill Gates' face!

Zen I think you hit the nail on the head with that respose. Even as mechanically inclined as I am I still have yet to figure out where my anti freeze is going in Jack. Every so often I have to add some. There's none mixed with the oil and there is none leaking out from under-neath it. I think it's a conspiracy to get me to spend $32.00 a year for a gallon of the coolant to help keep VW in business...

Wouldn't it be a worthwhile project to put together a research report on the history of Volkswagen in Chattanooga? With some of the documents we have and people like David who are primary sources we could come up with some excellent stuff! It's something we might want to consider after the show.
