Volks Folks Meeting Location

« on: June 29, 2005, 01:18:34 AM »
  I'm gonn'a open up a can of worms here and start this thread out here in public.  There are probably some non-members who have visited with us that wouldn't have a chance to throw their two cents worth in if we held this in the members only forum, so here it goes . . .   :lookaround:

Do we need to change meeting locations (again)?  If so, make some suggestions.

The current location food choices are too small, they don't serve gravy for their mashed potatoes and they upped the price (as far as I know it was unannounced - but I did miss the previous meeting so I'm not sure about that), and the food quality is not very good in my opinion.
As far as a replacement, I reckon our choices are pretty slim because from what I've heard we have at least 4 criteria:
1.) The restaurant must allow those who choose not to eat to come in.
2.) A buffet option is necessary.
3.) It needs to be fairly centrally located.
4.) It needs to be fairly inexpensive.

Maybe we should try approaching Golden Corral again and see if we can swing a deal with them. Or maybe we should consider an ethnic restaurant. The hard part is finding someplace that doesn't serve beer or alcohol. I'm not against beer - I just don't think it has a place at our meetings.
I'd also support someplace where we could just meet and possibly have food brought in or catered. One month order pizza, another month BBQ, another month do a covered dish - for those who work and can't prepare something they can always pick up a bucket of KFC or something else on their way. Might be a problem doing that logistically - but it might be a better solution.

That is what we've always had (or at least attempted to have) . . . it doesn't necessarily mean that's what we must always have . . . except for 3 and 4.  It does need to be centrally located and fairly inexpensive.

It doesn't "have to" be a restaurant.  Because it's in the evening on a week night and lots of folks have to travel a little to get there, a meal just about has to be involved . . . I kind'a like the idea of meeting somewhere and having pot luck, pizza, KFC, etc.

The first I heard of the price increase is when I was walking to the table with a plate of food and the waitress handed me a ticket.  I think it was Anthony I overheard saying something to the effect of, "They went up on the price, but at least they did give us less to choose from."

I'm not "against" staying at Country Place . . . It's a pretty good location, the room is big enough, etc., and I can handle paying $10 once a month for a meal that isn't really worth $10.  But if I had a wife and 2 or 3 kids with me at every meeting I don't know that I could afford to attend every month.  I've also heard more than one visitor complain about both the meal and the cost.  I just wanted to hear other's opinions so we could start looking for something better (which, as we've already found out isn't easy to do!) if the general opinion is that's what we need to do.   :-k

Not to get into this too deep...but to tell the truth, I really didn't want to leave Wally's.  But that is in the past.  That's where it shall remain.
Shoney's was a lot worse than where we are now.  Yeah, no gravy for the mashed potatos (what the?), but chicken fingers!  Chicken fingers!  I also noticed the price jump for nothing more than nothing to show for it.  I thought we had a set, negotiated price?
And yes, it does get expensive when you bring the spouse and the rugrats and everybody eats.
I wonder how much a conference room at a hotel might cost?  That doesn't solve any dinner problems, but its a suggestion.

What about Wally's on 3rd St. (or is it McAllie)? I believe the British Car Club meets there once a month and the decor was really nice when they rebuilt it after the fire.
I personnally like the covered dish / KFC / Pizza deal. 8)

After what we've gone through, Wally's doesn't seem so bad. Misty and I never really minded them to begin with. The McCallie location would be a pain to get to compared to the one by the interstate, though.

I agree with Cindy, Travis and Anthony, I think Wally's did work better for us. Better food, better variety of food and the cost is the same or less. I do like the meeting room at Country Place better, but thats the only good point that I can see. I would vote to go back to Wally's. :D

East Ridge location would definitely be better.  Access is better to us if we are just off the interstate somewhere. :)

The problem with the Golden Corral is the only option is the buffet.  If you come in, you HAVE to buy the meal whether you want to eat or not.  I agree that if you want a buffet, Golden Corral is the way to go . . . but what if you're broke?  You can't come to the meeting.

I talked to the Golden Corral people for Herb when we went through this before. The reason we didnt do it was that you cant just get a dessert and a drink or something like that if you want. If you eat it has to be the buffet. You can come in to a meeting free and not eat but anything else is the buffet.

Am I the only one who remembers all of the b&*#%ing and gripping about Wally's. Almost EVERYONE gripped about the service and the food. That was why we decided to move to begin with. Was it or was it not a club wide decision to move?

What gives now????? :?  :?  :?  :?  :?

No one has even mentioned Ryans on Lee Hwy. I've been meaning to go by and talk to them but I'll wait now.

I think time and bad experiance since we left may be clouding our judgement on Wally's.  I would LOVE to go back to the Wally's we all knew and loved for so long, BUT . . . let's not forget that the last few months we were there the food and the service had taken a nose dive!  More than one club member had also be treated very rudely and had run-in's with their folks about their bills.  That's why almost everyone was gripping about Wally's.  That's why the club took a vote to move.  There may have been those that abstained from voting, but the vote was unanimous.  The food and the service had gotten bad and was getting worse by the month . . . what you want to bet that unless there has been a change of ownership and management, it's probably worse now than when we voted to leave.

Let's learn from past mistakes.  We don't have to make any rash decisions and move to a new location by a set time and date.  If we move, let's all put our heads together and come up with a solution to the meeting location problem . . . not just swap the same problem to a different location.
