Vintage VW Commercials

« on: September 04, 2012, 06:31:48 PM »
What were your favorite VW commercials from "back in the day" (whenever that was)?

Besides the ones in our gallery, there are several that I remember. Keeping in mind that I had ZERO interest in VWs until the mid-1990s, it says a lot about the effectiveness of the commercial when I can remember them 40 years later.

Here's the tail end of my favorite Ghia commercial:

Then there's the one where archeologist in the future (2270) unearth a Beetle . . . a guy in it rolls down the window, thanks them and drives off.  Russ found it, but it's dubbed in another language:

Another of my favorites is a guy named Paul Revere that figured up the entire cost of driving a Beetle and went on a midnight ride to tell everyone "Two pennies a mile!"  I can't find that one anywhere.

I always assumed that he just drove the snowplow home.  That's what I would do.  No, scratch that.  I'd have to move futher south where you wouldn't need to worry about the snowplow.   ;D

Zen must not look in the gallery much...we don't have any commercials in there anymore. The new gallery software didn't support video files, so I moved them all over to YouTube. Here's a playlist of 'em all:

Here's a curiosity for you. This is a commercial for the New Beetle from 1998 called "Flower Power".

The iMac came out in the same year, and here's practically the same commercial, right down to the song by Stereolab.

I'm fairly certain the iMac version is a fan-made tribute, but still kind of neat.

Speaking of fan-made commercials, don't forget about this one for "Slobonium". First here's the original commercial for "Turbonium".

And the parody with, you guessed it, a bus.
