Sharp or maybe Aquos or maybe both (they may be the same thing) has a TV ad out now that has a man in a swimming pool, a lady in the window watching him and THEN................a beautiful Karman Ghia running into the pool. The car is beautiful or should I say was.

Go to http://www.moretosee.com and you can see the car going in. The web site is kinda crazy so you will just have to search around to find it.

There should be a law against commercials like this.

Hey Herb, I wouldn`t get to upset sbout the Ghia. I have seen a lot of movie and TV cars up close and if the Ghia was any example of these cars, It was most likley 75% rust and bondo. If you noticed, It was falling apart the minute it hit the water. Its amazing what you can do with duct tape, bondo and a good paint job. I looked at a fabulous 1940 Packard one time at  a MGM back lot. The Packard had been blown up,crashed, rolled over on different occasions in flims and from 100 feet it still looked great and ready to go again after the patch jobs. It still broke my heart to see . :(

They use that same Ghia (or one like it) in two or three other commercials as well.

I actually think its kind'a cool that they use a Ghia.  How many commercials do you see with air-cooled VWs in them?  How many commercials do you see featuring any other 30+-year-old cars?

ING had one a while back with a Ghia in it.
There was a commercial for some type of arthritis medicine a year or so back that showed an elderly woman swimming . . . somewhere in there they had a couple of very quick shots of her convertible bug.
Anyone remember the Honda commercial that showed a split-window bus with all the ecology stickers on it stopped at a crossroads?

Using an old VW is great advertising strategy.  Think about it.  Almost everyone you meet has at least one fond memory associated with an old VW.  Regardless of what your selling, put an old VW in the commercial and you've got an instant and positive EMOTIONAL attachment to the majority of your audience.  Most people spend money based on emotion and not what makes financial sense.

Great points Zen! You should have gone into marketing! :D

There was also a commercial a couple of years ago that had a lady with driving her white super beetle convertible. Don't recall what they were advertising though.

David, do you mean someone actually had a good memory about Gremlins & Pacers?

when I saw those commercials with the red Ghia I hurt to see them destroy it like that. Then I got to thinking... the whole below the water in the pool sequence was likely all digital and no real car hurt. Do you realize just how many takes they would have to do to get that one shot? I mean if they can fully digitize the entire attack on Pearl Harbor in the movie Pearl Harbor and make it come out so realistic then certainly they can make a simple Ghia dive into a pool!

Just had to ease my mind about the destruction of a perfectly good Ghia...
I went to that website Herb listed and captured the image of the Ghia coming over the hedge. Opened it in photoshop and blew it up and after studying it I can say without a doubt that it was definitely pasted in. Still working on the underwater shot.
Dang! don't I have something better to do?!

I'm posting the picture for others who might want to see.

Ghia from commercial. It didn't really jump the hedges, it was pasted in.

Charlton, I don`t have any personal experences with a Gremlin/Pacer ,but belive this or not, Gremlins and Pacers were a holy terror in SCCA road racing in a production stock class. Nothing could keep up with that big 252 ci six in that little body or the Pacer with the Ford based 289 ci V8(stock from AMC) until the Rabbit showed up.  The AMCs had their share of national championships. The Rabbits did very well racing with the AMCs after they found out how to keep the front wheel brgs/cv joints and spindles on the car. We would get a big kick out of watching a Gremlin come tearing by a  240 SX Nissan or a 924 Porsche down the front shute at Road Atlanta. These cars are now getting a little culty and considering the kind of stuff we have to buy now ,maybe the little AMCs were not so bad after. Did I really say that ? Hmmm :-k

That's correct. If you watch the clip when it hits the water, the bumper and the left headlight rim fall off immediately. Also the front grilles don't appear to be fastened on, or they may be missing altogether, I can't tell. Also there's a yellow license plate on the front in the video clip, whereas in the still shot Charlton posted there is no plate. It's pretty obvious by the lighting and the outline that the car was "pasted" into the shot.

I don't think they ruined a good Karmann Ghia...they probably pulled a rust bucket out of a yard somewhere and painted it up to look nice.

I think that was the second Aquos commerical. They used the same car in a commerical a couple weeks before that, where the Ghia looks like it was going to avoid a wreck and about to wrap it around a tree, then they advertise the TV. Very nice car

I agree with Charlton. I can't imagine good memories of a Pacer or Gremlin.
They remind me of oblivious poverty...not to imply that is in the past.  :)
Maybe the good memories are noticing how rare they are now.

I had a Gremlin Funny Car model when I was kid.  It was one of my favorites . . . I liked it because I thought it was pretty cool the way the body flipped up and it was drag rail underneth the body shell.  Most of the other models I built were stock and at most had an opening hood.

Anytime I see a Gremlin my first thought is "Where's the rest of your car, tutts?"  How many of you are old enough to remember that ad?

There was an error while liking
