Well this has been a exciting day. We came home from the club meeting last night only to be greeted by a big chunk of a Silver Maple tree on my side of the property line making its presents know on my next door neighbors car port and her little Isuzu PU. I can't belive that little 15 year truck held that limb up and so far as we can see only got a broken window and gutter damage on the carport. AS FAR AS WE CAN SEE. My homeowners Ins. is going to pick up the tab from the way they were talking this morning.  We have our fingers crossed [-o<  [-o<  [-o<

Sorry to hear that. It's always kind of scary when your tree falls on the neighbor.
I tried to get my neighbor to go in halfs to get some pines cut down that sat right on the property line. His house sit uphill of the pines so he declined saying he didn't feel they were a threat. A big storm came through a couple of weeks later and knocked one down up hill towards his house! We had a deal after that.
At least your tree didn't squash a bug!

Whats really weird is that a silver maple doesn't need a excuse to drop big limbs. If you look at one real close you would see that the limbs are twisted up like  torsion bars and when they get some age on them they just explode at a weak spot with no warning. I have a monster silver maple in my front yard that "crossed over" this spring. Its going to join the other one in the chipper. My Mom planted this tree in 1946 as a 4' switch and  I hate it that Im going to lose it. Its almost 3' in dia. and about 60' tall :(

I know it has to hurt to loose a tree you've watch grow up.  I planted several black walnuts as a teenager.  A couple of years ago a business bought the property they were on and knocked 'em down.  I have to drive by there every day going to work and look at a lot full of metal roofing . . . and no trees.   :(

I've always loved big trees, but I'm begining to hate them within reach of the house.  A few months ago I had limb out of a big oak in the front of the house fall through the roof of my front poarch during a storm.  About a month ago a big limb off our pecan tree fell on the garage . . . no storm, no wind, on good reason . . . it just broke off and fell across the roof of the garage.  I got lucky though.  It must have broke and fell down in slow motion and stopped when it hit the garage.  The tip of it was near the power lines so the city came out and cut it off the roof at no charge.  There is a slight dent in the peak of the 80+ year old tin roof but no real damage.  I got a bunch of firewood out of the deal . . . but I don't have any place to burn it.  :?

I lost another big limb out of my pecan tree this afternoon . . . thanks to a big limb on another tree, it didn't hit the Dasher that was parked directly under it!   =D>   It did, however, take the other limb down with it . . . at least until the garage stopped their downward progress.   #-o   Now I've got to figure out how to get all that firewood down to the ground without causing any further damage . . . or killing myself.   :-k

I finally admitted defeat and called in a professional.  State Farm will cover the cost of removing the broken limbs and repairing the garage roof, but the big pecan tree really needs to come down.  Well, at this rate, it will be down soon, but it really needs to come down in controlled environment, not one limb at a time.  The "tree guy" gave me on quote on taking it down, removing the stump and cleaning it up . . . $1950 . . . so I guess the tree will remain standing for the time being.

Even if I had the right equipment, I don't think I'd take it down for $2000.  It's a BIG tree and it has nowhere to fall . . . except my house, the power lines, my garage, or the neighbor's swimming pool. :?

that's a much better quote then when i had a tree pending doom on my house a couple years ago and the only person i could get to look at it quoted me $5000... luckily hurricane frances knocked it down for me and it just put a big dent in the dirt beside my house and knocked one peice of trim off and left me without power for a week.
