TN laws on lowered cars.

« on: August 17, 2009, 10:49:08 AM »
Ive searched and cant find any. The only ride height codes are for raised vehicles. Maybe a minimum height for headlights??? I'd love to find a source that list the all the TN laws and codes for modified cars.

The police haven't got a clue. I've had mixed results when asking. Ive been told it's fine and there isnt a law and I've been told the car is illegal. Ive also been told it's too low but I wouldnt write you up.
Just wondering whats the real scoop.

I don't think I have ever heard of a law about lowered cars. I think the rules for a raised car was passed because of P. U. trucks raised up to play off road, but when they ran into anybody on the highway they just drove over the poor souls in the other car. I saw the aftermath of such a accident on I-75 behind my house a few years ago when a Ford F150 P. U. raised about 3 ft ran into the back of a Volvo 240 wagon  that had slowed down due to traffic .Witness's
said that the truck was doing about 60 mph and didn't stop until the Front bumper hit the driver in the  back of the head and  killing her on impact. :(

I have reviewed the entire TN title code on vehicles. There is no law that I can find about lowered cars.
The bumper law states 14-31 inches but it is stated for a 4x4 vehicle as you mentioned. I starting to believe the local law boys are misquoting the law to their advantage. There are laws that mention destruction of roadways and the chasis contacting the road. One is mentione dunder construction vehicles the other....4x4's. Another terms talks about making altitude adjustment to bumpers again 4x4's.

I'm sure the way this place works he will write me a ticket on what he "knows" and the judge will agree. Hey it's just money! Pretty much the whole reason to pull you over anyways unless your doing something stupid.

Years ago (60's-70's) there were some laws concerning bumper height but it seems like it was aimed at the gasser style cars (which are back big-time) that sat crazy high in the front end.
I wish they would enforce some kind of law that would get those SUV lights out of my rear view mirror!
William Ellis told me that he had recently gotten a warning ticket because he has a clear cover over the license plate on his bus. I figured it was actually for going 140mph in that Splitty...or that ear drum bustin' air horn!

I have now read the entire TN code on motor vehicles...yeah ..I think.
There is a code about plate covers in TN. it's ok if it doesn't obstruct the tag. Like everything else it's subjective to the officer on what obstruct means.
Bottom line the codes are loosley written and open to the officers interpritation.

If it really matters I say they need to get a life. Aren't there a bunchs pill poppin meth heads running around they could mess with?Theres a bunch of con artist that hang out all over East Ridge bumming money there are several laws covering that but I see the same ones everyday, :?

I'm over it. I'm a fairlly law abiding citizen,I'm not afraid of courts or judges so if they got the time I guess I'll make the time.

I've always heard that the chassis of the car can't be lower than the hub of the wheel. How much truth to that there is, I don't know.

Luckly i have not been messed with in hixson yet,  i remeber an old issue of hot vw's that had a lowered bug pulled over and the police off.  had a ruler at the guys bumper.  If you don't repair the vehicle are they going to keep giving you tickets?  Do you think they would give tickets to the folks driving around with the old town car atc theat the air suspenson has failed and caused the car to sit on the ground?

The bottom line is that the laws are loosely written and open to what ever i the officer feels like doing. Most that I have spoken to who can quote a part of the code doesn't know the entire code. I was quoted a good bit of one of them then I told them its a code that applied to 4x4's. He swore I was wrong and I showed him the code in writting. The thing is he would have written a ticket and the judge would back him.

My advice is to copy Tn code 55 and cary a copy of it with a highliter pen in your car.
Travis you have to lower it alot more than yours to really have a problem and the cop in question is the one in front of your wifes school in the morning just to let ya know. Surely the giant 3 ft pot hole at the entrance had nothing to do with it.

You should leave your car just like it is Travis.
I'm raising the front of mine to level it out a bit. After the car has settled I must admit....It's too low for everyday driving.  Yes I said it.
I have considered air ride but I'm just not a fan and honestly it isnt very safe compared to the setup I have.

I'm raising it back up and using drop plates in the rear to get rid of the camber. I have a few other tricks as well but in the end the car will be almost as low as it is now but definetly within legal limits for the state of TN.

Dont be discouraged by my ranting most folks wouldnt have this problem.
Take a digrunteled police officer and make him a crossing guard, add in on really stupid lisensce plate issued by the state in the bible belt....you can see the odds are not in my favor.

After I adjust the car a smidgen and Put veteran plates back on it so It doesnt look like some kid owns it I doubt there will be any issues unless I add a "bad cop no donut" sticker later on.

The man was already ticked off. Seasoned police Sgt on crossing guard duty in a small town area. Think his buddies are giving him crap????
I rarely drive the car on a daily basis. I just got lucky enough to have a giant pot hole to scrape into and he was there to see it and I'm sure the 666 plate as I drove away made him real happy as well. Then Imagine having to drive back past him to get out.Me in a tshirt and shorts...tats..sunglasses ...low ridin corvaire...Buncha young punks.
