I applied for a title for the '66 Beetle in August.  Yesterday, I FINALLY got a letter back saying I need to have a letter from an authorized dealer confirming my "VIN" number.  What the...?  I've done this four times and there's never been a question, even though old VWs just have a chassis number.  Why might they be asking?

Didn't you say that someone had converted it to IRS?  Did the weld the trailing arm lugs in the 66 chassis or swap it to a later pan?  If they swapped it to a later pan the # stamped on the chassis won't be the original '66 VIN and that might be the problem.

Did you get a GA title with it?  I've heard several folks bringing a non-titled GA car into TN and had no problems, but I personnaly know of two cases that it turned into a nightmare and they were never able to title them.

The problem really isn't with TN, it's with the GA DOT.  You don't need a title to get a tag once the car is more than 15 years old, so why pay $18 for the title transfer when you're holding the original signed title?  The next time it changes hands it doesn't have a title and GA WILL NOT issue one.  That's ok as long the car stays in GA (or AL), but almost every other state requires a title regardless of age.

I bought my bus in GA without a title. The only thing I got from Steven was a bill of sale he scribbled on a notepad and the most recent tag receipt. Also he charged me sales tax since he's legally a car dealer down there.

In TN, they wanted an actual bill of sale printed out detailing the sales tax that I had paid, which was actually good because it meant I didn't have to pay double sales tax in TN and GA for the car. I called Steven and he mailed me another bill of sale and I think I ended up paying another $20 or so in TN and I had the car registered in my name. A few months later the title came in the mail too.

Believe it or not Anthony, but there are a lot of folks in Nashville who are finding themselves trying to justify there jobs.   This is NOT a joke.  Just plan fact.  I'm surprised they didn't send you the card to have a police officer fill out verifying the VIN.  I've never heard of having to go to a dealership for verifaction.

The numbers on the tunnel match and are '66, but it didn't have a title, just a tag receipt and notorized bill of sale.  You might be right about the person trying to justify their job.  I just hope it doesn't turn out to have been stolen 10 yrs. ago, or something! :(

wait a minute... looking at my tunnel again, somebody swapped two of the numbers on the paperwork!  The number on the GA paperwork is wrong, so the TN is wrong, too.  I guess when somebody in Nashville punched the number in, the computer brought it up as being owned by a little old lady from Pasadena, or something.  Well, I'm sending them the correct number, so we'll see what happens now.  Guess I won't be selling it anytime soon, might as well put an engine in it. ???
