This day in VW History

« on: December 07, 2004, 10:57:11 PM »
Charlton has been working on a list of events and dates attempting to come up with a VW related event for each day of the year.  Russ has it set up so you can add dates if you know any that aren't already listed (it's in the member's only section of the forum).  There are quite a few events already listed there, but I just found one for Dec. 7th that wasn't listed . . .

On this date in 1986, what was supposed to be the last Fusca (Brazilian Beetle) left the factory in Sao Paulo, making a grand total of 3,300,000 built there between 1959 and 1986.  7 years later (August, 1993) it went back into production.

I am hoping that we can accumulate enough events so that I can put a thing on the front page of the website that will tell you what happened on this day in VW history. If anyone comes across any more interesting facts, head over to the Members Only section for instructions on how to add them to the list, or post them in this thread and I'll add them.

I saw a book tonight at Books-A-Million that had lots of dates we could use.  It gave sort of a running history of the changes in the Beetle from 1945-1967.  Lots of mid-year changes were listed and had the chassis number and date that the change was made.

I almost bought it . . . then I saw that Ryan Lee Price was the author.  Rather than spend the money on the book, I figure we can just find the web site that he copied his informantion from.     Just in case you are wondering . . . I don't care much for Mr. Price . . . or that poor excuse for a VW magazine that he edits.

When did he start editing the magazine? I thought when one "edits" something, one corrects spelling, gramar, etc. Look at the next VWT you see and find ALL of the mistakes.

Because of Charlton's list and everyone else's contributions, I've got the VW History thing on the front page of the website now. Please keep the dates coming if you come across any important ones.

According to the gossip on Shoptalkforums.com, there won't be a next issue.  Primemedia pulled the plug because of shrinking ad dollars.  Ryan has yet to accept the responsibility for steering the ship onto the rocks (anyone surprised?).  You'd think Primemedia would have looked into a new editor or at least asked why advertisers were deserting.  Oh well, Although I'm no fan of Ryan or his editing skills, I hate to see any mag about VWs go to the junkyard.

I too was hoping that someone would see the light and can Mr. Price.  At one time it was my favorite VW Magazine.  One bright spot is that if it in fact goes under the new magazine on the horizon, German Addictions, will stand a better chance of success.  What make that even better is the new mag is based in the southeast, not in California!   :occasion5:
