The Pecan Tree Strikes Again

« on: June 23, 2010, 10:35:14 AM »
Just last weekend, I finished cleaning up the mess from the big limb that fell out of my pecan tree last fall.  I was walking out the back door this moring about 7:00 to head to work when I heard the loud pop. A couple of seconds later I heard another, then another . . . the it sounded like a small war had broken out.  At first I though someone was banging on the back of my garage with a sledge hammer . . . then I noticed this HUGE limb on my pecan tree slowly bending down.  It was directly over Justin's trailer that I had borrowed, and if it came all the way to the ground it was also going to get the front of my Reatta, Lucky (my 66 Deluxe Baja Rust Bus), my neighbors fence and pool building and the club's Chalk Bug.

Someone was watching over me this morning!  If I'd left 2 minutes earlier, I wouldn't have known anything until I got home this afternoon as saw all the damage.  Just about the time I thought it was going to break loose and fall to the ground, the end of it caught in the forks of a tree next to my neighbor's fence.  After about 5 more minutes of popping and cracking, it settled down . . . I hooked to the trailer and got it moved, move the Reatta and chalk bug out in the church parking lot and got in touch with Tom's Tree Service.  They got here quickly and started hacking away at it . . . they are just about done.  Looks like I escaped with no damage to anything but the tree.

This is a BIG tree with nowhere to go without hitting something.  I can't afford to have it removed all at once, so I'm taking down on the installment plan . . . one limb every 6 months.

I feel your pain Zen, we have a couple of large trees like this at our house that i look at every couple of days, wondering when that moment will come.... Actually, you look up at them and they look large... you go up the street, turn around, and look again, then it's not so much they look large as the house suddenly looks really small.   :-[
