The Pecan Tree Strikes Again

« on: September 08, 2009, 07:42:14 PM »
The last few limbs that fell out of our Pecan tree did the bulk of their damage to the cheap tin I put our old garage a few years ago, but the one that fell last Thursday landed on 3 cars . . . my '88 Buick Reatta (# 596 of about 4000 hand built year.  Only about 20,000 during the entire 4 year run from 88 - 91), my '68 Automatic Stickshift Beetle (another "first year" car) and our 96 Mercury Sable.

The good news is the Beetle had no damage, and the Reatta has a dent in the trunk lid.  It has started raining every time I get out there with the chain saw, so I haven't gotten everything cut away from the Sable yet.  I'm not sure how much damage there is to the Sable . . . but it's a $1200 car with a bad transmission that would probably cost $1500 to have fixed, so it's headed for the scrap yard anyway.

I did get a little firewood for our campout out of the deal . . . this could have been MUCH worse.   8)

The good news is the beetle is ok, i had a limb fall 6 feet from mine a couple of months ago and had a freinds car parked in the same spot a day before.

I would, but there's nowhere for it go.  The cheapest estimate I've gotten on haveing a tree service bring it down is about 2 grand.

It looks like it's going to have bumper crop of pecans again this year.  More nuts = more limbs breaking off and falling.  I just need to be a little more careful about where I park uninsured cars.

Zen, we had a tree cut down today at Jen's (daughter) house.  It was over 70 feet tall and probably 8 feet in diameter.  I had 4 estimates, 2 at 2k, 1 at $1600 and then this one...$900.  They came when they said they would and did what they said they would.  The name is...get ready for this...Big Woody's tree service.  (I can hear you all laughing)  Really.  The logo is just as bad.  BUT...they were great and the cheapest by far.

I'd love to have a grove of a hundred trees just like this one  8) . . . but not right in the center of a small back yard.  :|  It's within 20 or 30 feet of my house on the east side, West Main St. on the south side, my garage on the west side and my neighbor's yard on the north side.  Several of the bigger limbs have already fallen . . . but the ones that are left have the potential to do the most damage because they are WAY up there and there aren't any big limbs underneath them to slow 'em down if they fall.

I really need to get our Cabin finished and sell this place . . . and let the new owners deal with the trees. 8)

Aww, come on Zen.... As many cars there are at your house, it was  a miracle it took this long for one to have a limb dropped on...

At least the Dasher's pristine og. paint was spared....

You are rioght though... could have been a lot worse.

And it missed my '66 Deluxe Special Baja Edition Bus, which also sports it's "pristine og. paint."

But it's not the first time one of it's falling limbs has damaged a car back there.  The 69 Bug we used for the paint-a-bug at BP-3 took a hit on the rain gutter a few months after the show, and a few years before that our nearly new Dodge Intrepid received an $1800 hit.
