Squareback chevy 3.8 V6 conversion

« on: October 03, 2010, 03:57:35 PM »
I have recently acquired a Squareback that had sat in the woods for 20 years and sat in a barn for 10 before that (30 years total) and I found a company that makes a conversion kit for the type 3 trans to fit to a 3.8 Chevy V6. I have one out of a totaled 03 Impala. I want any tips or advise from anyone who has tackled a similar project or anyone one knows about type 3 conversions in general.

looks like you have your work cut out no matter what you do with the engine.  Engine swaps are for the experenced.  Never seen a v6 chevy engine in a vw.

This is the only photo I have that remotely relates to what you decribed. It was a Circle Yer Wagens in OCT 2006. I have no further info other than the pictures. Sounds like a pretty unique conversion for a fairly unique car; it might be hard to find someone locally that has tackled something similar. Thesamba might be a good place to find similar conversions. The only V6s I have seen mated to VW transaxles have been on rail buggies, so you might have luck searching for those.

Good luck, and keep us posted. I'd like to see how this turns out.

There's a guy that lives somewhere over around Chatsworth, GA (at least I think that's where he's from), Slick James, that does a lot of small block Chevy V8 conversions with VWs.  However, he uses custom built chassis and Chevy transmissions.  Oher than the body, he doesn't use much of the VW in his conversions.

Like Travis, I've never seen the conversion you are talking about doing.  That doesn't mean it hasn't been done or can't be done . . .

Bignick replied while I was typing . . . I "think" that squareback is some of Slick James' handywork.

Mounting the engine will be the easy part.  It's making it run and drive that takes all the time and planning.  Here is what I see you have and what you will need..
-project squareback
-donor vehicle with a 2003 3.8.  If all you have is a engine, you should find a complete car to use as a donor, this will save months of looking for all the parts needed.
-fuel supply system with a return line capable of 45 plus psi
-cooling system designed and manufactured by you that goes from the rear to the front of the vehicle that must have electronic cooling fans and will share the same space as the fuel system..this system will determine if the vehicle is usable or a novelty
-exhaust system custom made for this exact application, hacked pipes clamped together will cost ground clearance and cool points ;D not to mention it needs to stay far away from any cooling system parts that will probably be made out of the same material as heat transfer will easily cause problems.
-throttle control system..easy enough to make with cable type systems but pedal to throttle plate movement ratios will probably be different and will have to be delt with
-electronic engine management.  If your car is a 03, the ECM will probably have to be modified to run without the VATS (vehicle anti-theft system) unless you will be moving the ignition system from the donor vehicle to include the BCM(body control module),instrument cluster, and the complete wiring harness.  Fuse-relay boxes will need to be moved and modified to power all the newly added electronic control devices.
-vehicle wiring harness will have to be planned and made for this exact vehicle.  It will need to be at least a piggyback system that will allow all the original vehicle components to operate while running all the new electronics
-brakes,fuel tank, transmisson, wheel bearings, tie rods, stub axles,cv axles, and rear brake drum splines  will need to at least work as they should with the original engine
-the transmisson will break sooner or later..just a matter of fact
-the clutch will need to be in good shape, probably at least a 1700lb pressure plate...which will help the transmisson break ;D
This can be done, I have completed many engine swaps, most involve different manufacture drivetrain transplants, including 1 aircooled to water cooled conversion.  The time spent planning will payoff when you are driving the completed car!!  It will be a fun car for sure and fast too just gonna take a little time to build.

Yep, Been there, Done that.   I always wondered why auto mechanics had that strange crazed look on their faces and did weird things after work.  I didn't notice it until  after I retired .   :o ;D ;D
