I haven't, but I bought my bus from him without an engine. I think he got into building engines after I bought my bus. Prior to that I think he built his own, but it's only been recently that he started advertising rebuilds in the last 6 months. He is a very knowledgable individual and I wouldn't hesitate to hear him out. See what he says as far as what is actually replaced vs rebuilt or used, find out what brands the new parts are and see how much he stands behind his work. The last one should tell you a lot.

Travis, More information please... have you looked over one of his rebuilds? JCurious,

@OP,
AZenLunatic seems to know allot out of necessity, I think he had built his engines because as you have found out there are not allot of people doing it locally any more.
I agree with nick, go and talk to him.  I know one of the engines he was recently selling had all new OE German components in it that he had sourced from an old ACVW shop. He will tell you straight up what is in the engine.

Mr. Hixson has been mentioned as the local builder for the last few years, at least since David stopped building for Mainly Foreign. Mr. Hixson has been at bugapaluza and he was also up at CYW as well. He had a little red utility trailer with a couple of engines sitting on it last year at BP14. He was parked near where Jack from Bugstuff usually sets up. Seems like he was asking somewhere in the $600-700 range for either a 40hp or a 1600 SP. He had a few to pick from. I know that a lot of folks get their longblocks from him.

It's a problem isn't. Like Nick said. Do your homework. Just be careful. There are a lot of people who say they can Rebuild, overhaul, build a running engine, patch-up "something" for a cheap/ expensive price. Just because they have "rebuilt" 300 small block Chevys and a 1,000 Briggs lawn mower engines doesn't make them a A/C VW engine builder. Trust me on that one. JUST BE CAREFUL People.

His number is 842 4081(423). He is probably a little more like 800 to 900,  I know that he puts new bearings in them and does all the machine work himself.  I have used him many times and always been satisfied

What type of engine are you wanting built, factory or higher cc? What type of parts do you want, german/ brazil or chinese? Can the builder line bore? These questions are ones you should be asking. Also, experience? I have built many engines and will not quote a price till I see what you want. Retbugtech is right, be careful because there are too many people that don't need to be building engines.

You are doing exactly what I did.  I stopped building ANY modified stuff years ago. Way to much hassle trying to teach those Guys how to take care of anything. Have fun.

I agree sir, the bigger the engine, the more the owner needs to understand how to keep the engine running properly. Letting the engine "BREATHE" is very important.
