Question on Bumpers.

« on: August 01, 2011, 08:21:04 PM »
have checked the forums and net and have not been able toofind anything on the " T Bars " or " Nerf Bars " for Tennessee etc. Finding out for a possible future forum member that is looking at doing a cal look beetle and wants to use them instead of regular bumpers. Is there any problems with using them by state laws or with cities like East Ridge Red Bank etc. I used them on my first beetle in the early 80's and never had a problem or got stoped and cited by the police.

I have seen a handful of vehicles run the T-bars, but I never asked if they caught flak. I would imagine that since the vehicle is now considered an antique, it probably wouldn't matter. After reading some of the TN bumper laws, it seems that they apply mostly to off road vehicles and have to do with height, not continuity from wheel to wheel. I think the definition of "bumper" can be brought into question on this one.

And if that is clearly defined, we could always just ask what the meaning of the word "is" is!

Thanks for the thoughts on this. It being considered an antique view never occured to me. Once i get a little more research and views from other people that may know who knows i may just put them on my own beetle just too chainge things up for a bit. So any other views are much appritiated.

Even if they are technically illegal, most cops won't stop you for those type violations unless you give them other reasons.   But there is at least one Barney Fife on every police force.

I never was stopped with my beetle dragging the ground, i know it was to low and the bumpers were to low, i think the only time you would have trouble if you gave them a reason to mess with you. in 94 i drove my cal beetle with shaved bumper and was never stopped, at least for the bumper, i was 16, so there were some other reasons, like barking the tires

I think that's the real key point several have hit on.... bumpers alone, no biggee.... just don't give them any other reasons to pull you over, cuz then bumpers would probably be on the list...   ;)

Now that you mention it, I need to do something with Bonnie's front bumper. Shortly after I raised my baja's front suspension by cutting and turning it, I was checking to see how much stiffer the front springs were. I was bouncing on Bonnie's front bumper and then the baja. Back and forth. Until Bonnie's bumper snapped off! It turns out she had been in a wreck at some point and bent the bolts out of alignment. Instead of fixing it, the P.O. tack welded the bumper in place and those welds broke. I guess its good I found out this way, but I've been stepping over a bumper for almost a year now and driving without one. I haven't been pulled over. No worries.
