I think that VW ought to consider building a Polo size car in the U.S.A. for the  masses  with a TDI OPTION ,steel wheels, no power door locks or windows, only a 5 speed trans, leatherette interior, A/C OPTION. No B.S. electronics. Just a basic car to go from point A to B safely .
I know, all you young'uns wouldn't be caught dead in something like that, but I would bet I would get to point B as fast as you could and burn half as much fuel.

I agree. Compact electric and hybrid cars are still too costly and complicated. They still can't beat the efficiency and simplicity of a diesel engine.

I know what you guys are saying.  heck, i'd buy one.  The biggest problem is that people always say they'd buy it, but when automakers put it out in the market, nobody buys it.  On  a side note.... did anybody else see the thing on tv about the mini car crash tests.?  They paired the mini cars with their mid-size brothers from the same manufacturers....

Camry vs Yaris
Accord vs. Fit.....

But the best was Mercedes c-class vs. Smart Car.... punted and flung it through the air.

All had compromised passenger compartments.....of the little ones that is...

I wonder what my brother's Ford Excursion would have done to one of those little guys...

The last car ( I use the term loosely in this case) that fit the bill was the Yugo.
Rick, your Brother drives a Ford SUBDIVISION and not a Excursion

Hey Rick, I'm sure I saw the same video of the Smart car. It was brutal. In DC last week I saw a bunch of those "cars" (& loads of Mini's). Traveling from DC to Baltimore I saw a Smart car passing all traffic like they were sitting still. The guy wasn't even wearing a helmet! I may get kicked out of the Folks, but I must admit, I like the way they look...parked.

The honda element is basic transport and it sells.   The chevy/geo metro is a tiny commuter and it sold a lot.  those scions are pretty cheap looking

I've seen a Scion xB up close, they're actually really solid. They're just Toyotas. I liked it, but I'm partial to boxy things 8)

Russ you would love the new Kia Soul sence you like boxy things. I also have drove one of the Smart Cars and they are really fast on the exceleration etc. The inside is set up really well etc. The only problem is that if you want more than 2 people or one with a bunchh of luggage you are out of luck for space.......
