Been there, done that.  I've been rescued more than once by a club member.  The only time Homer the Superbus didn't make it home under his own power was the time it made the last 100 miles of the trip on Herb's tow dolly.  I'm usually pretty creative at patching and rigging stuff so I can limp home . . . but when there's a hole in the top of your engine case and a rod cap is sitting beside the engine, it's nice to know that there are folks that will respond to your pleas for help!

As a side note -- I still have this engine and I've gotten the chunk of metal out from under the cam lobe so it's not locked up anymore . . . I've borrowed a few parts off of it, but some day I'm putting it back together (minus the parts it spit out through the hole in the top of the case) and see if I can get it to run on the other 3 cylinders.

The only other time I've blown an engine, I was 150 miles from home and had $60 cash and a screwdriver.  I was also stuck in 4th gear (that might of had something to do with the blown engine since I had just crested the top of a mountain).  I was pulled off the side of the road and into the show grounds at Toccoa by a fellow club member (using a tow strap that anohter club member loaned me).  A bunch of club members jumped in and helped out buy loaning me tools, money, and muscle . . . the next day when the show was over Homer took off towards home sporting a new engine, and with all four gears to boot.  Another club member carried my old greasy, nasty, oil leaking, broken down engine back home for me in the bed of his spotlessly clean pickup.  As a backup, Herb even offered leave his VW at the house and drive a Ford over to the show the next day so he bring his tow dolly and pull Homer home again.  Actually, that made more sense than trying to throw together an engine at the show . . . but Homer's a proud vehicle . . . he doesn't really care that he has a $20 Krylon paint job or a few rust holes and a half ton of cracking bondo, but he really didn't want to be seen on a tow dolly again!  Still, it's nice to know that was an option.
