Parts from the Orient - Rant

« on: April 11, 2009, 09:18:32 PM »
It's not just VW aftermarket stuff from the far east the stink . . . I bought a clutch master cylinder from my S10 today.  The only one I found in town was at AutoZone . . . about $45 and had a lifetime warranty.  The old one had an adjustable rod . . . the new one was a fixed length.  I guess it will work . . . we'll see.  I bolted it on and tried to hook the rod up and the loop in the end of the rod wouldn't fit on its pin.  I took it back off and looked at it . . . the hole was full of slag and burrs.  I put in on the drill press and reamed it out, bolted it back on the loop slid over the pin just fine.  Then I tried to hook up the line from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder . . .  3 hours later, I took it back off again and deburred the threads and tried it again.  Finally got it all hooked up and started cleaning up.  When I picked up the bag the plastic bag it came in I noticed the label said "Made in Tiawan."  What really ticks me off is that these "cheap" parts from the orient aren't even cheap anymore . . . and you can't hardly find GOOD parts!  I'd much rather buy "American Made" parts, but we don't make anything here anymore!

Parts from the Orient - Rant

For the record, there are some vw parts for the newer cars that you can order from aftermarket companies.  But i have run into multiple scenarios where they may look alike, but don't work for poop.  Just ask Travis about the timing belt tensioner that messed up 3-4 times before he replaced it with a factory part.  They may have looked the same, but the factory part doesn't loosen up every other day or so....

That could get really expensive, really quick.

The worst part is that like Zen said, these parts are closing the gap on the prices every day.

For my car, I suck it up and dump the extra money for the real thing.... even the coolant....
