Paluza show activities - Activities at the show

« on: February 17, 2004, 08:55:51 AM »
I noticed that our flyer we folded at the meeting last night, has a paragraph under Events and Activities about "Other Activities" that will be announced later. I wonder if it might be possible to have some short seminars or classes or demonstrations for some of us more technically challenged members. Maybe a class on tips and tricks for VW maintainence. :)

That's a great idea. Everyone could use a refresher on, for example,  adjusting valves. I, too, would like to see some of these things done. It is definately something for us to look at. Our biggest problem though is man power. If more members participate, it would free up someone like Zen to sit under a canopy and do this.

At the High Country Bus Festival last July, they had a gentleman doing this type of thing and it was very informative and educational.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't volunteer for anything specific at the meeting last night but I will help and pitch in and do anything I can at the show. If nothing else I can at least be floating relief for the cooks, garbage pickup, whatever I can do.

Adjusting valves would be an easy demo . . . all we would need would be a long block on a stand.  It could even be a junk engine as long as it isn't locked up and doesn't have anything major wrong with the valve train.  I'll see if I can put one together just for this.

Any other ideas?    ???

What about a class on adjusting brakes?
How about an engine change out contest - to see who can drop an bug engine and put it back in the fastest - maybe as a team event? Or an event to do the old trick of seeing how many people you can stuff into a bug. Another event could be to have a bug push race - set up a course in the parking lot and have three person teams (1 driver, two pushers) pushing a bug around the course - may be too strenuous for some of us but the kids might get a kick out of it. I can think of things to do all day but don't know how realistic some of them might be. I think for next year we might look at having a more in-depth seminar on engine rebuilding?

Any ideas on a good way to have a demo on brake adjusting?  I don't think we want to jack up a car and have people try to crowd up under it.  If we could rig up some type of mock-up it would be great . . . any ideas?

Maybe we could use the engine from the valve adjusting demo and use it and the clubs baja from the paint-a-bug area and have an engine pull.

Our "Hippie Races" were a big hit last year . . . four "Hippies" pushed a bus a couple of hundred feet racing against the clock.  The team with the fasted time won $50.  Actually I like the way we did it the year before with two busses going head to head, but we don't have room for that anymore, and being down in the camping area, it didn't really draw a crowd.  Last year we did it in front of the stage just before the awards, and teams kept coming out of the woodwork.

We have also talked about some "mid-way" type games . . . throwing a rod through a block . . . a beauty ring toss . . . etc.  Our main problem with these type activities is manpower.

Don't put that engine together yet, Zen.  I've got the Vee engine I tanked a while back on the shelf in the garage.  It ran valiantly on 3 cylinders before we found the hole in the piston and pulled it, so I think the valvetrain is still good.  I know it turns.  I'll pull that head and check it.  As a matter of fact, I have a replacement set of jugs and pistons for it if we wanted to do a demo of how to assemble a short block into a long block!!!
