One eyed water cooled bugs?

« on: January 06, 2008, 05:04:16 PM »
Is it something new on the newer water cooled bugs. Thusday night while driving to work i passed 4 new bugs. 3 of them had the passenger headlight burned out and the drivers side working. The 4th bug had the passenger side headlight completely gone while the drivers side was working fine. A new trend maybe or just a major defect?

I've had two Mk IV Jettas and they both burn out headlights like crazy. I have to replace each about every six months or so. Same thing with a friend of mine who has a Mk IV Golf. I guess they all just burn out a lot. Plus New Beetles have headlights that are are a little trickier to replace.

1...The beetles have a nasty habit of burning up the headlamp harness along with the bulb.  If you own one, and the headlight goes out, look closely at the harness the bulb plugs into.  If the insulation looks brown/ split, replace the harness as well.
2...Recall was for the brake lamp switch.
3...Yes, they are tricky to replace, and one side effect of the facelift they did last year is that the headlamps are even more difficult to remove.  Oh joy!

It also doesn't help that the DRLs run the headlights (albiet at less than full power) the entire time the ignition is on.  Are the headlights crappy?  Not necessarily.  I know that I drive very little at night so my headlights don't get much use but if I were to turn them on and leave them on whenever my car was running I'd obviously notice an increase in burned out headlight bulbs.

That said, the Beetles do seem to go through bulbs more often than the other models but they also have a totally different headlight design from any other VW.  The '98s and early '99s had a different headlight harness in the assembly that was much worse than what's in the newer ones.  I used to change bulbs in at least 3 to 4 cars a day.  And yes, they are a pain to remove and/or install.

There was also a recall on the headlights... I dont think this is the one i am thinking of as i thought it actually had to do with the wiring to that specific headlight...

right... as i said... the one i was thinking of actually had something to do with the wiring harness on that side... i dont know why there isnt any info on it... perhaps vw just tried to fix it before there was a recall? it was in 00 or 01, pretty early on... or maybe they just redesigned the harness? it supposedly wasnt to happen after that, but it seems the new ones do it still... there was also a recall on the harness where the battery is... though i am not sure which side that is? or what exactly that problem was... i swear i am not dreaming this as at the time i hadnt even noticed the lights were always out on the same side...

When I started at the dealer in '99 Beetle headlight bulbs were a really common thing to replace.  I never saw a recall or a technical bulletin that specifically stated to replace the headlight harness - we just put the updated one in as they came in with blown bulbs.

Out of curiosity I looked through a bunch of old recalls and bulletins yesterday to see if there was anything there and came up with nothing.

I've read you can disable DRLs without VAG-COM with an easy headlight switch mod. When you pull the switch there's a terminal marked 'TFL', if you tape over it or bend it down you won't have DRLs.

I haven't done it as I think it's a good safety feature to leave them on, but I wonder if it would make a marginal difference in the life of the headlight bulbs.

It might not make a difference considering that most "Major Brand " bulbs are made in China.  Even a table lamp by my chair exploded a bulb when my puppy dog barked about 3 feet away asking for her treat. The dang bulb quivered about 5 times and blew up. Scared the Snot out of me and the Dog.The bulb was made in China. Must be those Bamboo filiments

Well, disabling the DRLs is your own choice but VWs view on it is if you're a technician and you get caught doing it - you're history, no questions asked.  If you decide to do that to your own car - have at it, it's your car.  Yes, you can modify the switch wiring or use a Vag-Com to do it but if you drive your car up to the dealer and ask us to do it you'll always get the same answer: We don't do that.  Same for the seatbelt chime and the "Accept" screen on the navigation system.  Those two things are annoying for a reason and the DRLs are for additional safety.

The bulbs are still made in Germany (Phillips).  No bamboo filaments here David.  :D  Look at it this way - if the bulb was designed to operate for, say, 1000 hours that 1000 hours comes a lot quicker on a car with DRLs than it does on a car without DRLs.  So, no, bulbs haven't gone to crap in the past 10 years they're just on a lot more than they were on earlier vehicles.

But back to the original question.  I haven't noticed any bias on which bulb goes out more frequently.  My experience has been that it seems to be a pretty even division from driver's to passenger's side.

I prefer to keep my DRLs operational. Besides what dubtech said there's also insurance. If your car is insured at a certain rate for having a safety feature such as DRLs and you get in a wreck, if your insurance company finds out you've disabled them they may consider that to be fraud.

So I just keep it stock and replace bulbs when they go out.
