Old Address for Southland Volkswagen on S. Broad St.

« on: December 15, 2008, 08:51:05 PM »
Does anybody have the address for the old Southland VW dealership when they were on S. Broad St?  I drive down the road everyday, and I'd be curious to see what's there now.

Thanks

Bill

Thanks for the tip on the address. Some areal photos suggested that some kind of foundations were still in place, but when I swung by this afternoon, the lot had been completely reconditioned and there is a travel agency there now.

Southland VW moved from Broad St. out to 5915 Brainerd Rd. in early spring 1964. This is where it all started for me when I went to work there in July 1964.  This where the Infinity/Volvo dealer is located now.

Wow, I had no idea that was a VW place.  I work in the building right next door (the old Southern Saddlery).  The building where the travel agency is now burned down quite some time ago.  They built that horrible building there earlier this year.

Yeah, when I heard the original location for the VW dealership was on Broad, I was thinking that it might have been on the east side of the street where the abandoned Isuzu(?) dealership now is.  I've looked at some older satellite photos of the travel agency lot and they showed some interesting foundations, but it was hard to tell if it was from the original VW buildings.

My visit to the site last week shows that it's all been paved over with nothing to see.

Whatever building was there before the travel agency was quite small (for a dealership at least).  If you drive past the travel agency and look behind it, you can see the raised area that consisted of the original foundations.

Hey Ret.Bugtech, was Southland located near where Hailey Porsche-Audi  was located on Broad? My uncle sold Porsches there for years and always had a demo to drive. He crashed at least one. And they used to let them auto-cross those cars on Sundays! Can you imagine?! Do you remember Warren Marion working at Southland in the early 70's? He was turning wrenches there when he was about 16 years old. The guy was a mechanical genius from birth. He had the first hot rod Beetle I ever saw (it had a purple header which blew my mind). It was a '66 that his dad bought new and I actually saw him get air under the front tire when he grabbed 2nd gear turning from Igou Gap road on to Gunbarrel (never stopped at the stop sign). I peddeled my Huffy Wheel drag bike as fast as I could to tell him he did a wheelie. I don't think he ever did believe me!
