North American International Auto Show

« on: January 21, 2014, 10:02:08 AM »
We went to Detroit this past weekend for the annual Detroit Auto Show at COBO Hall. We flew in on Friday and got up early for the show which opens around 9am. The ticket cost was an affordable $13, which is cheaper than the World of Wheels here in Chattanooga! We started this year out in the domestics because they are usually swamped by the afternoon. We typically start in the German corner, but decided this would be easier. It wasn't! We saw the new all aluminum F150, Abraham Lincoln at Lincoln's display, the new suburbans, the new Chevy Colorado (with a diesel coming in 2016), Nissan's concept, Chrysler 200, Lexus, Toyota, Hyundai, VW, MINI, BMW, AUDI, Mercedes, Smart, Cadillac, Infiniti, Subaru, Acura, and Honda.

Then we went downstairs and saw all of the aftermarket stuff that can be available. Downstairs they had the New Equus Bass 770 (AKA the CharMaroStang). They decided to build a $250,000 supercar and make it look just like the Charger, Camaro and the Mustang. It was a weak business plan, but they have already presold 20! They were definitely a huge talk of the show. Maybe it was their Mustang styling with the GM powertrain... Maybe it was the Hyundai name? My brother was talking to their rep and he said, "So these are made in Korea?" The Rep said, "No." kinda puzzled, followed by, "may I ask why you thought it was built in Korea?" To which my brother replied, "Aren't you guys owned by Hyundai?" The guy was not amused.

Volkswagen was very weak. They have talked a lot about their SUV, but there was not an SUV in their display. When you read the article in the TimesFreePress about the new CEO's strategy, he is pushing SUVs and says the Golf is not a huge percentage of their market. They had a new GTI and the electric Golf on display. I was very disappointed...

I took a bunch of wheel photos because they always intrigue me.

Disappointing that VW didn't have a better showing. Still sounds like a fun trip though!

Yeah, everything that Horn said recently was the exact opposite of their display. I don't see how they are on track to the 1 million vehicles sold with that kind of message....
