I am new to this forum. I have a restored 73 VW vert, which I have been working on for a few years now. I recently cam across a 73 FI automatic Fastback. I have rebuilt many a beetle and bus, but this animal is new to me. I am looking for some people that have or have knowledge of these cars. Please help!!!! lol[/url]

Welcome!  I had a '71 Fastback, but it was manual transmission.  I do know a little about the Fuel Injection on these beasts, but not the auto transmission.

Hey BigPapa, Welcome to our forum.   Does your Fast-back funtion ?
Those Type-3s sorta of got a bad rap but they are not a bad ride if things were right.  The sore spots were the cooling system and the auto-matic transmission. Most everthing else is pretty much straight forward VW.
You can deal with the cooling system by just keeping things intact.
As far as the automatic tranny goes, it seemed to me that they were either very, very good or really bad and not the type of thing that Home Crafters should mess with.  I'm not sure if you can even get parts for the auto-matic anymore.
If yours works and the ATF is nice and red, consider yourselve lucky.
Just don't let it run out of ATF as they are prone to leaking.  If it is not leaking, you better had ck the fluid level. DO NOT OVERFILL. Any brand of ATF works if it is labeled having Dextron -1 or -2.  Good luck !!

I appreciate the info there my friend. Her transmission works fine, just a FI issue which I am planning to trash and replace with carbs. I have recently aquired another Fasty and posted a few pics of her and Sunny...our 73 VW Vert on the show us your ride page.

When I got her...she would't start...after finding several wires off, she fired up, yet had no power. I took the battery out to charge, and when I put it back in, she rufuses to start now. She is getting spark, I am lost on this kind of injection.

I found this page a long time ago on the type 2 list that has a great explanation of how the injection works and how to test it.  Hope this helps.

Don't trash the FI system...when it is working correctly it is superior to any carb setup. But if you must remove it, save the parts because some of them may fit on my bus!
